'APTus AppCenter' not useable

Dear SparkyLinux Developer(s) and Members,

Unfortunately, your 'Sparky APTus AppCenter' (latest version 20240601~sparky7~0) cannot be applied on my SparkyLinux installation (from ISO image 'Minimal GUI i686', on my pentium 4 computer) with openbox, since it simply just shows an empty white window without text or buttons, one would have to click on (they are all invisible).

You could try finding out what the terminal command is to run the APTus AppCenter and then try running it from the terminal. That may produce output in the terminal that could help you figure out what the problem is and how to resolve it.

Also, when you're looking for help on this or other similar forums, it would be good for you to provide as much relevant information as possible. You can use the command-line tool 'inxi' and its various options to generate general / specific / relevant information about your system that you can then copy from the terminal (Shift + Ctrl + C) and paste into your post here using the code markers for easier readability. (Hover over the icons above where you're writing till you see the one marked 'Code', click on that and it should give you code markers like this: "code""/code" except with bracket markers in place of the quote markers. Then just paste the inxi output from the terminal between the code markers so it will show up correctly [you can use the preview option to check it's working as expected].) The 'inxi' tool has lots of different options -- here is just one example:

Are you sure you're using the right command? When I try that command on Sparky 7.x Xfce, it says 'command not found'. (Note that the command to run a program may not be the same as the name of the installation package for that program.) I would check the wiki and/or do a search of these forums or just in general online to try to find the right command to use.

Hi, rektal, thanks for the updates. When I run it from the terminal I also get the "Overriding existing handler for signal 10. Set JSC_SIGNAL_FOR_GC if you want WebKit to use a different signal" output, but the GUI still works as expected. One difference is that my system is Sparky 7.x (based on Debian 'stable') whereas yours is Sparky 8.x (based on Debian 'testing', I think). From what I've heard, it's more common for various types of problems to show up in Debian testing when they are updating / upgrading / changing packages, etc., and sometimes these get resolved 'automatically' in a number of days. However, 'AxL' is also on Sparky 8.x and the app is working fine for him, so there must be some difference between your systems.

I did a bit of a search online with the output "Overriding existing handler for signal 10. Set JSC_SIGNAL_FOR_GC if you want WebKit to use a different signal", and it seems to indicate that the problem could be caused by WebKit. So you could check out what webkit-related packages are on your system and if any of those were updated recently, since that might be the source of the problem. If so, you could see if anyone has reported it as a WebKit bug and/or you could look for a way to downgrade to an earlier version of WebKit to see if that works. If you have compositing enabled on your system, you could also try to disable that to see if it solves it (I saw this suggestion in relation to Nvidia graphics cards, along with another idea related to disabling hardware acceleration if that's an option anywhere).

So there's at least some chance that this is not a Sparky bug, although the Sparky developer(s) do control which packages are included in the repos, so if they can confirm there is a problem with one or more packages and downgrade them in the repos, then that would make things easier for you. But it's also possible for you to do a downgrade on your own if you already know how or are willing to learn, although my sense is it's not necessarily an easy process.

So I don't have any easy answers for you, but these ideas should help point you in the right direction.

Thanks, @rektal. I notice that you have Nvidia for graphics -- that could be causing the issue as well. It might be helpful for you to compare your system's info with that of @AxL -- perhaps they would be willing to post that here for your reference. Meanwhile, I'd definitely recommend looking at the recent history of your system's updates, since that might give you a clue of one or more packages / updates that might have caused the issue.

I couldn't find which packages are missing. APTus is broken for me now. I couldn't fix it.

want you to know that I'm still there on my research for the reason(s) why 'Sparky APTus AppCenter' is not working on system configurations like mine or rektal's ...

In the meantime and for the future, I would strictly recommend not to rely on GUI tools such as 'Sparky APTus AppCenter' to manage software packages. If you - 'rektal' - prefer to use a GUI for that, then better use the robust and well-tested allrounder 'synaptic' (that comes with Debian, also installed with Sparky 7 & 8), instead.

However, I prefer the command-line utility 'apt' or 'apt-get' for installing, updating, removing, and otherwise managing deb packages (for debian based distributions). To learn more about the 'apt' command open your terminal and type 'man apt'.

Because 'APTus AppCenter' is not applicable on my machine (since my first installation of Sparky7.3 in May), I would have no other choice anyway.

Instead, I regularly use the following 'apt-get' commands in the terminal, to keep my system clean and up-to-date:

Thanks for your latest post, Patrick. There are at least some apps that can be installed via the APTus AppCenter that can't be installed via 'apt', 'apt-get', and probably not Synaptic either. You could still find other ways to install these, but I find that the AppCenter makes the process easier. When possible, I do usually use the command-line utilities to install things since it's easier. But for updates I find it easier to use the Sparky upgrade app that automatically checks for updates, alerts you, and then runs through the process if you give it the 'OK'. If, for some reason, that runs into trouble, then I hit the command-line again to sort it out.

Interesting that you also have Nvidia graphics -- the issue might be that combined with a recent update. It would be interesting to know whether @AxL's system uses non-Nvidia graphics. Here I've got Intel and am not seeing the problem.

(This is off-topic, but I notice from your system info that you have a 'Logitech Webcam C270'. I have that web-cam and it seemed to work fine for awhile but then I started having issues with it disconnecting randomly. Have you ever experienced that?)
