Hi guys,

I have been struggling recently having purchased a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy Rx and foolishly I also purchased a 'Think Penguin' sound card which only provided sound through headphones. I now have found a distribution I can live with - what a fantastic sound chooser you have, pulse audio and alsa and sound card configurator - I can now listen to locally stored music files and video files with sound on the internet!

You distribution gets 20/10. I currently mod on another forum and currently attempting to write an unofficial manual for the OS.

Time for me to start creating some walls for SPARKY! Yaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!

What sound choose are you talking about?  and How is our wiki in your eyes?

BTW, i Like sparky also!

OK, for more detail I recently updated my rig from an Asus ML5 USB3 AMD Phenom x6 rig to an Asus PRIME X470-PRO - which comes with an Intel HD Audio chipset that does not get picked up in Ubuntu 18.04 (in my case a derivative, Zorin 15 Beta based on 18.04.2):

"Digital Output (S/PDIF) - Family 17h (Models 00h-0fh) HD Audio Controller"

I found a thread on askubuntu by a user with the exact same issue. I hunted around for soundcard threads about Soundblaster cards and purchased an Audigy Rx 7.1/5.1 Surround sound card. Nothing working unless I blacklisted both the onboard 'snd-hda-intel' and the graphics card hdmi 'snd-hda-intel'. So it would work once then not on reboot. Removed Pulse Audio safely and installed ALSA - Sound for system but not for YouTube or Netflix.

The only systems I have got consistent sound with are Debian based distributions - E-live 3.0.6, FerenOS, Makulu Lindoz15 and most recently the wonderful Sparky Linux 5.7. I haven't looked at the Wiki as I am a seasoned GNU/Linux user, first introduced to me by a School IT Technician who gave me Knoppix 2.9 in about 2004 if memory serves me - my first live distro experience. My first installed experience was Mandrake 10 which I managed to bork after downloading updates via a computer with fast broadband connection and burnt to CD as I could only afford dial-up at the time.  ;) ;D

Sorry you lost me again.  I'd be using ALSA right now but it seems like literally nobody is producing documentation for ALSA.

Back in the day, I could plug USB audio dongles into Lubuntu and quickly switch over the headphone and microphone with a 2 line shell script.

Mainly I was asking, was there a GUI "sound chooser" that I don't know about, or is it pavucontrol ?

BTW, what are you using your PC for?  I use mine for collecting mp3, youtube and stuff.

I had problems on and off with an onboard  amd sound card with a spidf digital output  on an amd cpu-gpu.   #!  and then  Siduction.  alsamixer would usually work when it would flip from digital to analog with updates.  However on occasion that would not work.

I did not have to remove pa (pulse-audio).  I went to pacmd   - it shows Everything.  I only use as a last resort.   From a previous post.

man pacmd

Basically, I have only had success (temporarily) with Zorin by blacklisting the onboard sound and the hdmi graphics card chipset (nvidia). It appears that Debian and forks can happily have ALSA and Pulse Audio running/installed alongside each other - SparkyLinux 5.7, Feren OS and Makuklu Lindoz 15 - these are the only ones (oh and Elive 3.0.6 stable) that work out of the box.

My usage varies. For music I use www.jamendo.com - downloads are predominantly free with a few artists that charge - it holds the largest collection of Creative Commons Licences in the world. Only business have to subscribe - Ikea the furniture store uses it for its inhouse music or have done in the past. My favourite collective is Tunguska Electronic Music Society - formed by a group of Russian (and Swedish) musicians on the anniversary of the Tunguska Meteor that wiped out the Tunguska forest in Russia. My favourite artists include Aquascape (I created a music video using one of their tracks, 'Sunrise' which I have on my Vimeo account: https://vimeo.com/97644609). I also use the PC for creating instructional videos on GNU/Linux and moving wallpapers for those distributions that support it such as Zorin Ultimate and Netrunner. I also create Walls (https://www.pling.com/u/swarfendor437/) and writing unofficial manuals for ZorinOS:

https://zoringroup.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13891

https://zoringroup.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14361

I've also used it to create tutorial video for Inkscape in creating Tactile Diagrams for students with a Vision Impairment, together with a 'manual' on how to create Tactile Images (created in LibreOffice with the help of 'Shutter' for screen grabs of menus etc.)

I play the occasional game but I mainly play on PS4 these days when it comes to gaming.  My introduction to Vinyl was a very long time ago. As a young boy the family had some great 78's including Bill Haley's #Rock around the Clock# (don't know what happened to it when my Dad died) and also Connie Francis #Fallin# https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7RUjXf9wR0. I don't have a specific genre of music I prefer over another. My most recent interest has been in discovering Industrial:

Ok!  I have to ask, have you got the moving wallpaper thing working in sparky?
I'll have to check out jamendo if I make a video today... i need background music.    I was going to use https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5rQOLlxH7o as a background for the video then I realized it's going to get DRM'ed on youtube.

All  my old industrial music is kind of bad now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrmsJhf89MY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StZcUAPRRac Rammstein being the exception ^

I also took a look at your user manual.  Looks good to me, although I would have included a different set of things.    Hopefully the next manual you write will get you some $$$.

The act of selling something forces you to remove a lot of distracting information from your pitch.  At least that's what I was wishing for when reading the manual.

Cheers.

I don't do anything in GNU/Linux for material gain - just like sharing the GNU/Linux Love. Just completed the manual for ZorinOS 15 and yes there are some typos!
