Dell Lattitude E6410 laptop wifi not picking up stuck on wire, (solved)

I hope that I am posting this on the correct board. To be honest I am quite new to Linux. I wanted a machine that could run some good games and be portable so I picked up the laptop on E-bay without a hard drive. so I took an old hard drive from another laptop, formatted it, and Installed SparkyLinux 5.1 GameOver, I think x86_64/amd64. The problem I had was that I couldn't connect to the internet over the Wifi. So I took a wire and connected it directly to my router. The internet worked immediately. I was offered a first-time boot update, so I ran that hoping that might solve the issue.

When It finished the kernel It said to reboot. so I rebooted. The reboot only went halfway. The computer shut off and the two of the lock keys stayed on, Caps lock and some other lock and the number lock stayed blinking. the computer never turned back on. The only thing that happened was that the number lock stopped blinking and stayed on. When I went to boot it back on I unplugged the wire because I wanted to test to see if I could pick up without a wire. Instead of booting I got a black screen saying a lot of stuff failed and that I reached max reboots.

From there I turned the computer off replugged the wire and booted the computer up. It worked. I unplugged the wire and The internet dropped. It didn't even seem to detect any wireless.  I really hope I stayed within the rules of the forums. sorry If I broke any of the rules. And I hope I provided enough detail. It is possible that It is a hardware Issue. But I figured I should look into the possibility of it being something I did wrong with the OS first before I pay to have internals looked at.

About the weird reboot? I do not have a clue. For the wifi, please post the output of "lspci -nn" in codemarks as a start.

I am sorry But I do not know how to do that:-\. I tried looking it up and I've come up with nothing. Could you please tell me how to get the output of Ispci -nn and what you mean by post the results in code marks.

Looks like you have used "I" (block i) on the beginning of the command;  should be "l" (small L): lspci

Relax, just start your terminal, give the command: lspci -nn and you will get something like that below. Copy paste the output into the codemarks. You find the codemarks by clicking the # symbol in the forum editor you use when posting here. :)

No worry Kid_Leggo, looks like you need the iwlwifi driver. First check if you got it installed. In terminal do:

apt search iwlwifi

Hmmm. It says It is already installed. and something did show up that didn't before. It now has a section that says wi-fi networks but It says device not ready.

Is there no indication in the network-manager-applet of any kind? Or is it just the wireless that is missing?

A long shot but you can try these two commands, first;

systemctl enable NetworkManager.service

then;

systemctl start NetworkManager.service

you might have to reboot to see if it works.

Did you test the iso how it worked live before yuo installed? If no, please try it out in a live situation to see if it discovers your wifi network. Did you install from usb? How did you transfer the iso file to your install media?

I think I figured out what might be wrong. I think it might be something wrong with the wifi chip. When I first got the Os installed and I clicked on the wifi cone the list of internet connection options only showed ethernet network. I ran the check to check the driver that you sent and It said that the driver was indeed already installed. I still didn't see it so I turned the computer off and back on to see that in the box showed up a wifi option.

although I did not know how to use the menu It got me a step closer. I figured I would try to figure that out myself later. When I booted the computer back up there is no wifi option.

To answer the question yes I did try it live first and It did not pick up the wifi. I thought It might have been because It was live that it didn't work. I tried it with USB but for some reason, the computer wasn't reading the USB I used so I put the iso on a disc by right-clicking the iso and using the burn function.

You are probably right about the wifi chip. These things happen, maybe you can get a new one. At the least it works with a wired connection. If the wireless works live it works also installed, if it does not work live, something is wrong. Missing driver or as inn your case a screwed up chip. Hope you will get it sorted out one way or another. :)
