Well, today is an auspicious day as far as I'm concerned ..... even tho it is Friday 13th lol.

This is because I've been upset ever since Ubuntu decided to ditch 32-bit - which I think means that all its derivatives like Linux Mint do too - and I've hunted round high and low for a replacement based on Debian (which isn't giving up on 32-bit) with the Mate desktop which is my fave.

Sparky hasn't brought out a default Mate 32-bit version yet - although one is apparently in the wings - the reason I needed it being that (a) I hate throwing away tech just cos it's out of date, (b) cos I refurbish old IT (which is dead cheap or sometimes free even) with a Linux OS and give it away to needy families, and (c) I'm a nerdy wordy geek guy lol.

But then (yay!) I discovered that you can easily install a Mate desktop on 32-bit Sparky using Aptus, Dropbux can be added too, and everything else you could want - and omg Sparky Mate is wow as good as Ubuntu Mate!

So ....... I've refurbished this super little 32-bit Fizzbook netbook (which cost me £35 + £5p&p on eBay!) using Sparky Mate, and this is the result:

What do you think?

I'm into minimalist looks and Sparky Minimal Gui is a perfect choice just to install and tweak it a little since it's well configured by default. I use Openbox for stacking and i3 for tiling setup. I modified my Tint2 panel to be as minimalist and clean as possible. The magnifying glass icon opens rofi search window which is preinstaled with i3 to use with Super+Shift+D shortcut, but I like to use it on Openbox too by clicking the icon. For i3bar/i3blocks on i3 session, I removed some i3blocks indicators and changed the icons for text labels and the time/date format. My i3bar is black and window labels are the same colour as grey window titlebars in Openbox. I also changed the font for DejaVu Sans Mono in the whole system. Just wanted everything to be as consistent as possible. The default Sparky5 Openbox and icon theme is better than others I tried.

I wasn't familiar with neofetch.  Bash.   (Maybe I have been living under a rock).  I looked at the Debian package page, seems quite nice.

I've found about neofetch when watching people's desktop screenshots. They often used it and other one called screenfetch. Some people set it's output as a welcome "banner" in their terminals.  :)

Maybe it wasn't a good idea to show my hardware information, since I got very low-end for today's standards over 10 years old HP550 office laptop with ancient Intel GMA graphics chip. And I use it as my main machine now. I really like to revive older hardware and make it as fast as possible for everyday use.

Everything worked out of the box for the live session. Nice work Team Sparky.

May get a chance to install later this week.
