node.js / npm / nvm installation

Hi chaps, some problems with npm. I installed node.js via Synaptic. Accordin g to the developers, this should automatically set up npm. It doesn't. I tried re-installing using the instructions at nodejs.org for a package manager but got a message about Tyche not being supported. Can anyone explain what's going on? Best, NP.

I shall answer my own question in case anyone Googles this. Node.js apparently likes to be installed via nvm. Doing so is easy. Instrs. near the bottom of the page:
