Sparky minimal gui 4.5, upgraded to unstable. I have purged lightdm, and use startx instead. After todays d-u I got this;

Do you want to continue? [Y/n] Y
Setting up initramfs-tools (0.125) ...
update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools (0.125) ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-4.8.0-2-amd64
E: /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/plymouth failed with return 1.
update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-4.8.0-2-amd64 with 1.
dpkg: error processing package initramfs-tools (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
initramfs-tools
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Have done apt  "--configure -a, install -f, autoremove", but still stuck at above output. When doing "sudo apt purge plymouth -s" I get this;

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  libplymouth4 sparky-apt sparky-artwork sparky-grub-theme sparky-keyring
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  plymouth* plymouth-themes* sparky-core* sparky-plymouth*
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 4 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
1 not fully installed or removed.
Purg sparky-core [4-20160717]
Purg sparky-plymouth [0.1.2]
Purg plymouth-themes [0.9.2-3+b1]
Purg plymouth [0.9.2-3+b1]
Conf initramfs-tools (0.125 Debian:unstable [all])

Is it safe to remove plymouth? And more important, does it help?  :)

Plymouth does  give you a graphical boot splash instead of those pesky messages from systemd.  (sarcasm)

On my lxqt sid install
aptitude show plymouth
Package: plymouth
Version: 0.9.2-3+b1
New: yes
State: not installed
Priority: optional
Section: misc

It's your call.

Edit:  Btw  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=847343   ##  "apt full upgrade" yielded no problems with plymouth not present.

Search forum for "More info easier via inxi"    If requested -  no inxi, no help for you by  me.
