EDIT: Although smxi got the job done and installed the nVidia drivers, I can see a few negative things about it:
1. Source install - instant breakage when kernel upgrades happen.
Yep, but simply run sgfxi and it re-installs driver (which it saved in /usr/src/sgfxi-downloads/)
Quote2. smxi annoys the hell out of me with all those questions and it's not something easy to use for someone without at least some Linux knowledge.
Yes, it is a bit of a task, even daunting the first time you use it, but most of those questions are just on the first time use. As mentioned using sgfxi to install or re-install video driver on new kernels is quite easy (but as you mention perhaps a bit daunting to a new user).
Quote3. It requires the user to go down to CLI to run (won't run in a X terminal). A big no-no in our case.

EDIT 2:
moros@sparky-dev:~$ uname -a
Linux sparky-dev 3.15-6.dmz.2-liquorix-amd64 #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT Tue Jul 22 13:29:57 UTC 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux

...with nVidia binary drivers. :)
As I said: it gets the job done, but it's too loud and asks too many questions. However... we could base our GUI solutions on those scripts. ;)

Now THAT would be a big plus... ;)

A quick update: the nvidia-driver package has returned a few days ago. ;)
There's no such thing as "impossible". :)
