Benefits of Sparky: Unique software, for example?

Hi everyone,

Sparky is a Debian-based distro, which I understand to mean that it mostly uses Debian's packages with and without modifications.

I'd like to learn about the benefits of Sparky:

  • Does Sparky also provide software packages that are not available in Debian? Can you mention any interesting examples?
  • Are there any fresh screenshots about how Sparky desktop looks like?  Is there some common theme that looks approximately the same regardless of the desktop system selected?
  • Any other benefits you'd like to highlight?

Thanks!

1.  Sparky supplies the non-free firmware etc from the beginning without having to hunt down the non-free iso's - images from Debian.

2.  Slightly different kernels settings, search the forum or others might post.

3.  Myself I am a apt in terminal type of user, but aptus is a very minimal gui with very few dependencies that basically "just works."  My opinion is that the gui synaptic can cause problems occasionally in the testing - rolling version.  I do not see very many if at all bugs or failures for aptus.

4.  The ppa's.   Debian would never include ppas from outside that Sparky allows you to decide to use if you choose.   It is quite probable that usage of these ppa's will not  mess up your system.   There are many ppas out there that are Ubuntucentric that can mess up your system.   So if you are thinking you need capability Y and ppas   Ble,  Blu and Bly are options to supply that capability, you can research less and try the ppa that Sparky has and worry less.

5.  As there is a rolling part to Sparky, you do not have to wait months for the new stable to become the new Sparky as is the case for BunsenLinux.

6.  Not sure on status of calamares installer in Debian.   Sparky has the options of Calamare and the old faithful Advanced Installer (forked from Remastersys)

Most sparky user don't need to justify their use of Sparky. We know what is good and what is bad in the Linux world followed by  many years of Linux use. But, if I had to narrow it down to something, I would have to say it's "choice." Choice to decide what you want and don't want in a distribution, something that lacking in a raw Debian edition. Therefore, Sparky gives you this choice, it has great security, privacy, has a  large section of apps and allows you to customize your operating system/desktop  as you please.

Lastly,  the Sparky forum is very friendly to both old and new users.  If you post a problem, a suggested solution is using posted quickly by another user. What else can you ask from a distribution? Oh, it's free too.
