Hello all

Is it possible to upgrade from the version "Linux 4.9.0-8-amd64 # 1 SMP Debian 4.9.144-3 (2019-02-02) x86_64 GNU / Linux" to the latest, version 5.7.1 ?

I would like to know if I can make this Sparky system update without "losing" my entire configuration?
thanks for the help and the answers to come

have a good day

Short answer is yes, you very well might upgrade.  It will involve editing some items in /etc/apt/sources.list     and also editing some files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

There are version numbers for Distributions, i.e. Sparky, Debian, Ubuntu.  Sparky rolling is 5.7, the seventh update Sparky 5 (I believe 7th upgrade.)  Stable Sparky is at 4.9.2

The kernel for all of linux has version numbers now also.  The standard kernel versions for Sparky 4 (stable) and Sparky 5 (rolling, following Debian Testing) is about 4.19 depending on  what you are following.  I believe Debian stable is at 4.09, which is not that old.

The kernels have just changed to version 5, you can find kernels of 5.01, 5.02 and 5.03 around.  The writer of the first linux kernel and still very involved decades later stated that there is not a big difference between the the last 4.x kernels and the new 5.0x kernels.  It was just a good time to change.

Many believe that for older motherboards, cpu's, and especially certain video cards, etc. , that there is not a huge reason to go to newer kernels unless you need or really want a specific function.

Newer hardware will often benefit or even need newer kernels.

One request.  If you have not installed it, please install "inxi"  and then from a terminal post the output of
"inxi -Fxx"

Also helpful would be to post your /etc/apt/sources.list   files contents.   Please mark up as code via the # button

hello to you Paxmark1
and of course thank you for your help and your explanations!
Super interesting! the story is that I downloaded the latest live versions of sparky and during testing, I realized that my browser (waterfox) had no problem with these latest versions ... Selling sites that refuse basket, etc ..., saying that my browser is too old? With the new versions of sparky it works, hence my idea to think that it is not waterfox that is "too old" but can be the system ... seeing what you explain, that's not it either!

thanks again for your help have a good day

;)
