A couple of weeks ago I installed sparkylinux-3.4.1-x86_64-base.iso to a spare partition and upgraded it just with apt-get. There were a few hiccups - I think I might have had to aptitude once or twice - but system is now up-to-date and running fine with 3.16.0-4 kernel. I mention this because I have been reading some posts worried about doing big upgrades. Can only say, worked without too much trouble for me. Of course, this was just a spare install to play with window managers, so I wasn't risking anything.

A couple of weeks isn't that big a deal for Testing/Unstable.  Going for months can supposedly cause issues, but I've read on the siduction forums where someone waited weeks/months before performing an upgrade and everything worked out, although waiting that long is not recommended.

Thank you for mentioning the kernel version.  Someone was asking about this particular version over in the installation forum.  I'm going to reference your post.
