hi all

i'm still dealing with my beloved ooooold office pc...

i was wonedring -maybe i've already told you about this..- since icons tend to disappear and reappear in a pretty random fashion, excepting when mouse goes over them, cause they're forced to refresh, can it be a video driver issue?

in such a case i remember nvidia stopped support to old stuff for new kernels, am i right?

if so.. what am i supposed to do? install ms dos?

Hi.

It sounds like a strange behaviour with the desktop environment rather than the drivers, but if you want to try the nVidia's binary driver with GeForce MX440, then the nVidia site suggests that you use a legacy 96.43 version of the driver. Sparky is based on Debian testing (jessie), which doesn't contain the drivers for that version anymore (which is something we will look into, as Sparky is also intended for older computers).

You can also try installing the required packages yourself. The packages in question is nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx ( http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/nvidia-glx-legacy-96xx ). You still can obtain it from the wheezy, wheezy-backports or squezy Debian repositories.

A sample instruction of how to get the backporst repository going can be found here: http://backports.debian.org/Instructions/

A ticket for the missing drivers has been created: https://sourceforge.net/p/sparkylinux/tickets/10/
There's no such thing as "impossible". :)

wow.. seems like i'm powerful :D

here's what i recollected today, sorry for the order but i'm pretty on haste:

i am not sure it can be a desktop environment issue... though i'm curious to check on e17....:

i dont' remember if anything went wrong with mate, but i used to test some old versions of antix and surroundings on it a while ago and it all went pretty much ok.. least there was atlasx (debian stable... stable to 2.6 kernel.....) however i'm giving e17 a try later, before i mess xorg/drivers/headers/whoever

Today i had time to look around.. some people report to be  affected by glitching.. (alas they ask on ubuntu forums where they are answered "we are not compiling drivers, buy new hardware"....)

So i had a look to nouveau site where they say nvidia has started providing them info in september, so i guess i can bear glitching for some more

On the other side (proprietary drivers) it seems that the last version of the nvidia drivers is intended for xorg 1.0, rather than for a specific kernel... i guess i'm making some tests on monday, if i cannot today

i've tried with e17, alas i could have only snowlinux at hand...

those two minutes i've used it ave no flickering issue..

i had it update and upgrade, but had to do a shudown 3600 cause i had to go away

oki

i'm with sparky linux

desktop sparkling issue is gone

however with pacman i keep  having that issue, while with dolphin no..

so i guess it's something between nouveau and the libraries beneath

edit: i could activate kwin: razor is much faster now....

just browsing can halt this machine sometimes...

how can i  set dolphin to be my default file manager?
