Last post by pamibo - November 16, 2025, 04:10:25 PM
Hello,

I'm using Sparky 6.12.57+deb13-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.12.57-1 (2025-11-05) x86_64 GNU/Linux
and I'd like to know where I can configure it so that I can log in as a user after startup?
My machine is always ready to use immediately without logging in.
Thanks for any information.

Suggestions / Openbox in 2026 for SparkyLinu...
Last post by kanliot - November 15, 2025, 06:05:21 PM
in 2025, Ubuntu has gone Wayland only. I still always use Openbox.

I may be expecting Debian to drop x.org in 2026, which is complicated.

Red Hat Linux, owned by IBM, since they paid $34,000,000,000 for it a few years ago, they are put in a position of spending much money to promote a new standard, Wayland, which must be more secure than the old standard.  So, not surprising that some of the Maintainers for X.org decide to act poorly and abandon future X.org maintenance while still working for Red Hat.  https://blog.desdelinux.net/en/red-hat-intends-to-stop-x-org-server-development/

So, the two companies that have spent $$$ on Wayland have decided that X.org is too expensive.  Since this is political effort, the politics will go bad for X.org and the X.org fork, Xlibre.

I have a 6 core Ryzen desktop, with 32GB DDR4 RAM, I much appreciate the snappiness of Openbox.

Any effort spent in supporting X.org or Xlibre would be appreciated, even if it means moving away from Debian.  Thank you.

I don't know what the problem you have with the menus may be.
Personally, I have checked in my XFCE installation and their menus were perfectly correct.

So, I recommend that you check out the specific XFCE forums.
Good luck !!

Hello,
desktop is Xfce, but now the situation is extrem critical. Yesterday I reinstalled another disappeared app. Today I found out that another app (I don't know the name of the app, but it is thge one like notepad) wich I really need urgently. But what is realy critical: Today the whiskermenu has disappeared. This means, I cannot use the computer in a normal way. I work hard with my computer every day. now there is no time for any reparation works anymore. I will draw the emergency break and reiinstall the whole computer with another OS - I think I will choose debian 13. What I think, there must be a real reason for such big problems, maybe a virus or something else. I never had this in the last 25 years of computing. Sorry

because several apps suddenly disappeared from the menu, and I have no idea, why this happened and if they are gone completely or only from the menu ...

Well, it seems like the first question is obvious. Which desktop (KDE, LXQt, Mate, Xfce)
or window manager (Openbox, Fluxbox ... etc) are you using?

Cheers !!

Applications / Several Sparky Apps suddenly d...
Last post by Sparkyphone - November 10, 2025, 01:53:55 AM
Hello,
I'm writing this, because several apps suddenly disappeared from the menu, and I have no idea, why this happened and if they are gone completely or only from the menu:
The first one was Aptus - the Sparky installation tool, gone a few months ago, okay there is Synaptic
The second one was Atril, the pdf-Viewer, I reinstalled it with Synaptic
Today I found out, simple scan is no more there, I mean in the menu
What is that ?
As I do not know what is the exact name of these apps, I cannot try to start them from the terminal
Does anybody have an idea ?
greets,
Armin

Supplement:
Together with Aptus, the update(called "upgrade")-app disappeared also. Before the update-app was displayed sometimes two times a day, or at least every three days, now nothing happenes (or perhaps I do not see it).

To whom it may concern:

Some time ago, I changed my options/preferences, about Lagrange (because it has a lot of bugs).

Right now, I use kristall and amfora (both available in the debian testing repositories, which is a real guarantee)

Cheers !!

System upgrading / Jump from Sparky 6 to 8 ? [SOL...
Last post by Changala - November 08, 2025, 03:34:53 PM
Is it safely possible to upgrade version directly from 6 to 8 (changing the repos from "bullseye" to "trixie", without stepping through "bookworm") ?
Thank you

Installation / Re: Password requirements just...

Quote from: AxL on October 25, 2025, 04:43:56 PMIt is simply highly recommended,

I don't mind recommendations. It was not letting me continue with the install until I chose a password it agreed with.

That seems overbearing, doesn't it? As you said, I can change the password after install. So, why be so controlling during the install?

It sounds like you're saying it lets you do what you want. But, that wasn't my experience.

[Edit: My original post was using Sparky stable lxqt. I just tried Sparky stable xfce thinking perhaps I was confused in my first experience, or it was limited to just that edition. I got the same thing. It won't let me proceed to install until I satisfy its password requirement.

The way you spoke to me, it sounds like that's the last thing you'd expect it to do (that I was complaining about a mere suggestion about password strength). I assume this change wasn't intentional. I just wanted to report it. As I said in my first try: I've seen this once before. It was Linux Lite, and they said it was a calamares setting they weren't aware of, or got turned on by accident.

It would be more friendly if Sparky could go back to just suggesting strength like other distros using calamares. This is the only one I've run into that won't let you proceed with the install until your password is sufficiently strong. Not only does this seem antithetical to the philosophy of linux, but as Axl pointed out: I can change it later to be anything I want. Why can't I just do that during install? It doesn't make sense. It's a hoop to jump through that isn't friendly, inviting, etc. I only pointed it out because I think Sparky is a good distro, and this could be a turn off for people. It is for me.]
