System upgrading / apt --fix-broken install
Last post by grahamperrin - April 03, 2025, 02:50:20 AM
I have a very rarely used installation of Sparky, in VirtualBox.

A few months ago – probably 27th August 2024, after not using the machine since 3rd June – when an upgrade failed (and the GUI was unusable) I was invited to run:

apt --fix-broken install

The command failed, repeatedly, so I shelved the installation for a while.

On 22nd February 2025, I took the two screenshots below. As far as I can tell:

On 29th March, when I retried the command, it succeeded. I proceeded to fix installations of KDE and SDDM.

If it's not too vague a question:

  • was I simply unlucky in August last year and February this year?

Sparky applications / problem to install gimp
Last post by Sparkyphone - March 30, 2025, 04:09:58 PM
Hello, I installed Sparky 7.6 Orion-Belt (6.1.0-32-amd64) about a week ago, and now have a problem to install gimp.
At first I tried to install it with the Aptus App Center and - when this failed - with Synaptic, this again failed. My last attempt was with the terminal. The problem seems to be the same no matter wich way
I try to install it.
It has to do with unaccomplished dependences.
The files libgegl-0.4-0, libavformat59, libswscale6, libavutil57 are depending on each other, and the "bad guy" of those four is 'libavutil57' wich seems to be the wrong version.
Here is the terminal-progress of the failed installation.
(unfortunatly it is in german, but I think it is understandable):

~$ sudo apt update

 libgegl-0.4-0 : Hängt ab von: libavformat59 (>= 7:5.0)

Is it possible, to install this file alone, or do I just have to save them in (a) certain folder(s) ?
I hope somebody knows...

if the youtube application is listed in the system menu, simply find it and copy from:
/usr/share/applications/

to:
/home/USER/Desktop/

If it is Openbox, you need to enable idesk.

You have 2 the same mozilla's source lists:
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/mozilla.list:1
and
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/mozilla.list:2

remove one of theme, as root.

Newbie questions / Re: How to start sparkylinux-7...
Last post by Sparkyphone - March 27, 2025, 09:25:17 PM
I have found out, how to get into the graphical mode of sparkylinux-7.6-arm64.
It is the command: "systemctl set-default graphical.target". The command had to be executed as root. After the next reboot, Rasberry started in graphical mode.
After having solved this problem, I noticed the next one: No tone out of my USB-Audio-Interface. But this is for the next thread...
Would someone mark the thread as SOLVED ? I didn't find out how to do this. Thank you.

I think, I damaged the second installation by simply pulling out the power-supply, after I didn't find a command to shutdown the Rasberry from the terminal. Now I know better. Holding Fn & F10 for a while did it.
If I start the Rasberry with a fresh Sparky-Installation with a Login-name and a password wich are already set in Rasb.PI Imager, it starts in Terminalmode. I can switch to any directory and can see all the files, but unfortunatly still don't find anything, that would start the graphics modus. I even don't know, if it is possible. It is possible the other way,I know. There must be a command for this.

Newbie questions / [SOLVED]-How to start sparkyli...
Last post by Sparkyphone - March 27, 2025, 03:58:20 PM
Hello,
I'm new to this forum, and here is my first question:
1.I used the Rasberry Pi Imager to write sparkylinux-7.6-arm64 to the micro sd card.
Thne I started my Rasberry Pi the first time with sparky. a login screen (original debian screen) appeared and I should write a username and a password to log in. Strange: I didn't create any useraccount before, because there was no opportunity to do this at any time of the boot process.
2.I decided to overwrite the sd card with a new sparky Image on it. In Rasberry Pi Imager exists the possibility to create a useraccount in the installation settings, so my user account will already be included while Sparky OS is written to the SD-Card.
Within the second attempt to boot Sparky I did the login while still in terminal mode.
As a result I was logged in, but only in terminal mode. There was no way to start the desktop. By the way: what is the default-desktop of the arm-Version - xfce ?
- But maybe my mistake was to fill in my login data while the Rasberry is still in terminal- mode, and not wait, until the desktop is loaded.
Rebooting a 2nd time did a new thing: I was asked to do a netinstall of an os to the Rasberry. It didn't recognize Sparky OS anymore.
So: What is there to do, to start Sparky on a Rasberry correctly ?
Thanks for an answer,
Armin

Newbie questions / Re: How to install Wine?
Last post by AxL - March 26, 2025, 05:27:15 PM
Quote from: ken on March 26, 2025, 01:45:15 PMHi, I had no idea about this command line approach. By the way, is this only valid for Wine?. I'm doing this, but Wine doesn't appear anywhere. Do I need to do anything else?
[....]

Let's see, lad.

The 'install -s' option, simply performs a simulation. To check the availability, conflicts ... etc, of all the necessary packages.
 Nothing more.

So, do yourself a favor and check the documentation. And read the fantastic manual (RTFM).

And if you want to install wine for real use:

sudo apt install wine
