The primary partition #1 be must ext4, mount point "/"
Partition #2 swap 1 gb, primary?
Simplest install requires a partition (primary or extended) mount point / , and linux does like to have a swap partition(primary or extended). Ext4 is safe choice for file system. Many other options possible.
I have /dev/sda3 mounted as / and /dev/sdb2 as swap. Swap size was recommended ram size+, not sure if that still applies but if you have a big hard-drive, why not.
