Observing similar issues after kmod upgrade from version 26-3 to
26+20191223-1.

initramfs is built, despite of errors reported and all systems affected
are bootable without problems for me.

Do you have any reason to believe that the initrfamfs was not generated
successfully?

This is only cosmetic, and it needs to be fixed in /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs
by copying modules.builtin.bin too:

-for x in modules.builtin modules.order; do
+for x in modules.builtin modules.builtin.bin modules.order; do

I'm not sure if it's related but I saw almost the same error on last
upgrade (but for 5.4.0-2):

depmod: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod.c:515 lookup_builtin_file() could not open builtin file '/var/tmp/mkinitramfs_J2sneW/lib/modules/5.4.0-2-amd64/modules.builtin.bin'

and I now get:

Error: Unable to list kernel events: Kernel tracer not available
root@vsid:~# journalctl -u lttng-sessiond.service
[...]
Jan 07 09:33:20 vsid lttng-sessiond[403]: Error: Failed to load kmod library resources
Jan 07 09:33:20 vsid lttng-sessiond[403]: Warning: No kernel tracer available

lttng-modules-dkms is installed. I can load the modules manually but I
still get the same error.

No. I just meant successful command completion. A reboot worked fine. So,
no serious issues.

Hi,

If you had just installed the lttng-modules-dkms and lttng-tools packages,
it's possible that the lttng-sessiond deamon was started before the kernel
modules were built and so it couldn't load them. Simply restarting the
sessiond should fix this.

Cheers,

Michael

Looks like the modules are built before lttng-sessiond is started:

	Setting up lttng-tools (2.11.0-3) ...

Still, it doesn't work.

> Simply restarting the sessiond should fix this.

I tried restarting lttng-sessiond or rebooting the machine but it was no
help, lttng-sessiond always reports:
Error: Failed to load kmod library resources
	Warning: No kernel tracer available

A quick look into the code shows that is:
src/bin/lttng-sessiond/modprobe.c
	kmod_set_log_fn(*ctx, log_kmod, NULL);
	ret = kmod_load_resources(*ctx);
	if (ret < 0) {
		ERR("Failed to load kmod library resources");
		goto error;
	}

I didn't dig into libkmod, but I noticed (using opensnoop.bt) the
following:
	8071 lttng-sessiond 2 0 /lib/modules/5.4.0-2-amd64/modules.dep.bin
	8071 lttng-sessiond 2 0 /lib/modules/5.4.0-2-amd64/modules.alias.bin
	8071 lttng-sessiond 2 0 /lib/modules/5.4.0-2-amd64/modules.symbols.bin
	8071 lttng-sessiond 2 0 /lib/modules/5.4.0-2-amd64/modules.builtin.alias.bin

On another machine which I haven't yet updated and where lttng still
works, I see:
	193519 lttng-sessiond 2 0 /lib/modules/5.4.0-1-amd64/modules.dep.bin
	193519 lttng-sessiond 2 0 /lib/modules/5.4.0-1-amd64/modules.alias.bin
	193519 lttng-sessiond 2 0 /lib/modules/5.4.0-1-amd64/modules.symbols.bin
	193519 lttng-sessiond 2 0 /lib/modules/5.4.0-1-amd64/modules.builtin.bin

Not sure if /lib/modules/5.4.0-2-amd64/modules.builtin.alias.bin is
relevant but it's an empty file...

After downgrading libkmod2 from
	Version: 26+20191223-1
to
	Version: 26-3
the issue with lttng is no longer apparent:
	root@vsid:/tmp# lttng list --kernel
	Kernel events:

The small patch at https://salsa.debian.org/kernel-team/initramfs-tools/merge_requests/23 (https://salsa.debian.org/kernel-team/initramfs-tools/merge_requests/23) works fine.

Before:
100s of depmod: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod.c:515 lookup_builtin_file() could not open builtin file '/var/tmp/mkinitramfs_DkdaZa/lib/modules/5.4.0-2-amd64/modules.builtin.bin

With patch:
No Errors.

same error repeating again and again during both plain upgrade and
dist-upgrade on sid, so much that it clears all the previous scrollback
in the terminal (just one line would be fine)

i found this suggestion that says to edit a line in
"/usr/sbin/mkinitramfs" file, like this:

https://salsa.debian.org/kernel-team/initramfs-tools/merge_requests/23/diffs

the above edit does the job of getting rid of the console error spam.
someone has to incorporate this edit in an "initramfs-tools-core"
update. the file that needs the above edit belongs to
"initramfs-tools-core". it's neither "kmod" nor "initramfs-tools" (maybe
updating kmod triggers the bug, but the bug itself is in
"initramfs-tools-core")

this is the list of files of "initramfs-tools-core", and you will see
the affected file is in there (this serial redirect is because it's from
another remote system) :

modules.builtin.bin is created, and always regenerated, by depmod based
on modules.builtin. Requiring modules.builtin.bin to exist before
running depmod makes no sense at all.

So what change made depmod spit out this pointless warning? You should
fix that bug instead insisting that some other package paper over it.

So here is what I think is part of what is going on (unless there is
something broken in my analysis):

Since 898490c010b5 ("moduleparam: Save information about built-in
modules in separate file")[1] which is in 5.2-rc1, there is a new
modules.builtin.modinfo provided.

 [1]: <https://git.kernel.org/linus/898490c010b5d2e499e03b7e815fc214209ac583>

This one is installed in the -unsigned binary packages but not copied
over into the signing template, so the signed linux image packages do
not contain it.

Now with kmod/26+20191223-1 we have 60084cf1cb24 ("libkmod: Add parser
for modules.builtin.modinfo")[2] adding the parser and [3] and [4]
using that.

 [3]: <https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/utils/kernel/kmod/kmod.git/commit/?id=73eed2aba3cbe18bbda40f18f7bc32e8de1ec81f>

FYI: the bug is Debian-specific and introduced long ago with this patch:

bjorn@miraculix:/tmp/kmod-26+20191223$ cat debian/patches/verbose_missing_bin
Description: Report an error when some .bin files do not exist

Non-existing files is expected for libkmod in some situations, like the
current example when depmod is looking up a module while generating
dependencies for it.

so, what's to be done now? Marco d'Itri says that this error is
pointless, Bjørn says that this is normal and this behaviour is expected
sometimes (kmod looking for nonexistent stuff)

is it just a harmless error "spam"? update the system as usual and just
ignore the error "waterfall" in the console? use the patch (the edited
line in /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs) and then update?

Printing spurious error messages is a bug, and we will fix it (whether
in kmod or in initramfs-tools, is to be decided).

But since (so far as I know) there hasn't been any regression in the
functioning of the resulting initramfs, the bug doesn't need to be
fixed right this instant.

Ben.

These error messages also appear in the 'make modules_install' step when
building a standard Linux kernel.

Can we expect a fix soon in whatever package causes the console spam? It's
a rude awakening to get hit by these messages first thing in the morning
when doing maintenance.

Control: severity -1 serious

This bug resulted in system breakage for me.

I'm using an Intel 82579V gigabit NIC with a gigabit router and failing to
copy built-in modules prevented the NIC from negotiating with gigabit speeds.
After applying the patch, creating a new initramfs and rebooting, now I can
connect with gigabit speeds again.

This bug is breaking many systems in subtle ways I think.

Regards,

Hakan

So the change causing it should be reverted until it has been decided

Hello,

This bug resulted in complete system breakage and I couldn't boot
anymore (systemd failing to load Kernel modules). I can guarantee that
this isn't only cosmetic.

I believe this isn't related to initramfs-tools, because downgrading
kmod and libkmod2 from version 26+20191223-1 to version 26-3 fixes the
issue. Initramfs now build (and run) correctly.

IMHO this is probably an unrelated bug in the same kmod upgrade. You
should report it as such, which the full log output and a subject
decribing the issue instead of the bogus error message.

The logspam caused by the lookup_builtin_file() bug makes it hard to
spot real errors, but hopefully there is some clue to your problem there
too.

Yes, this fix
https://salsa.debian.org/kernel-team/initramfs-tools/merge_requests/23/diffs
indeed at least silenced (maybe fixed) those wornings after
update-initramfs -u

Hope you will pull that in initramfs-tools-core as shown by dpkg -S
./mkinitramfs

And *I hope* it will happen faster than with this obnoxious bug:

Hi.

I had tried the patch published in this bug report, but this fix doesnt fix
the issue on debian testing. The initramfs update process still emits
warnings about missing file for depmod.
The system is almost unmodified and running in virtualization
Virtuabox Host system is debian stable.

I dont think using a package from other releasse, especially from debian
unstable is a good idea. Other issue with this approach is that it can have
dependency on packages from unstable.

Is there any estimation on fixing this issue.

Thank You

Hello,

> #948257

In https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=948257#105, Ben is
wondering whether the fix should not be done in kmod since the ERROR
displayed is due to a Debian-specific patch that you applied
(debian/patches/verbose_missing_bin):
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=948257#95

Can you please take position and explain why you think this should be
fixed in initramfs-tools when the message is not even displayed
in upstream's kmod ?

The message also seems to appear during a manual kernel build and install:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=948257#110

Given all this, it seems cleaner to drop the patch
debian/patches/verbose_missing_bin that you applied.

Cheers,
