Well, it seems like the first question is obvious. Which desktop (KDE, LXQt, Mate, Xfce)
or window manager (Openbox, Fluxbox ... etc) are you using?

Applications / Several Sparky Apps suddenly d...
Last post by Sparkyphone - November 10, 2025, 01:53:55 AM
Hello,
I'm writing this, because several apps suddenly disappeared from the menu, and I have no idea, why this happened and if they are gone completely or only from the menu:
The first one was Aptus - the Sparky installation tool, gone a few months ago, okay there is Synaptic
The second one was Atril, the pdf-Viewer, I reinstalled it with Synaptic
Today I found out, simple scan is no more there, I mean in the menu
What is that ?
As I do not know what is the exact name of these apps, I cannot try to start them from the terminal
Does anybody have an idea ?
greets,
Armin

Supplement:
Together with Aptus, the update(called "upgrade")-app disappeared also. Before the update-app was displayed sometimes two times a day, or at least every three days, now nothing happenes (or perhaps I do not see it).

To whom it may concern:

Some time ago, I changed my options/preferences, about Lagrange (because it has a lot of bugs).

Right now, I use kristall and amfora (both available in the debian testing repositories, which is a real guarantee)

Cheers !!

System upgrading / Jump from Sparky 6 to 8 ? [SOL...
Last post by Changala - November 08, 2025, 03:34:53 PM
Is it safely possible to upgrade version directly from 6 to 8 (changing the repos from "bullseye" to "trixie", without stepping through "bookworm") ?
Thank you

Installation / Re: Password requirements just...

Quote from: AxL on October 25, 2025, 04:43:56 PMIt is simply highly recommended,

I don't mind recommendations. It was not letting me continue with the install until I chose a password it agreed with.

That seems overbearing, doesn't it? As you said, I can change the password after install. So, why be so controlling during the install?

It sounds like you're saying it lets you do what you want. But, that wasn't my experience.

[Edit: My original post was using Sparky stable lxqt. I just tried Sparky stable xfce thinking perhaps I was confused in my first experience, or it was limited to just that edition. I got the same thing. It won't let me proceed to install until I satisfy its password requirement.

The way you spoke to me, it sounds like that's the last thing you'd expect it to do (that I was complaining about a mere suggestion about password strength). I assume this change wasn't intentional. I just wanted to report it. As I said in my first try: I've seen this once before. It was Linux Lite, and they said it was a calamares setting they weren't aware of, or got turned on by accident.

It would be more friendly if Sparky could go back to just suggesting strength like other distros using calamares. This is the only one I've run into that won't let you proceed with the install until your password is sufficiently strong. Not only does this seem antithetical to the philosophy of linux, but as Axl pointed out: I can change it later to be anything I want. Why can't I just do that during install? It doesn't make sense. It's a hoop to jump through that isn't friendly, inviting, etc. I only pointed it out because I think Sparky is a good distro, and this could be a turn off for people. It is for me.]

System upgrading / after upgrade from 7.8 to 8 no...
Last post by Dietmar - November 01, 2025, 12:55:06 PM
Dear all
today I upgraded the system from 7.8 Orion Belt to 8.0 Trixie
No errors occured during upgrade. After restart, the system starts as expected, but the KDE Menustarter does not have any entry. Everything is empty.
Also new was, that I must enter my password at startprocess although I set it up in the past without it.
How can I solve this issue?
Thanks for support
Best regards
Dietmar

Soleved: Started kmenuedit with Alt + F2 and pushed "Build Standard Menu" - than Menu Entry are visible.

System upgrading / Re: Sparky 8 to 9 - Updates .....

Quote from: 21grams on October 29, 2025, 08:41:08 AMThe Enabled:yes addition to allows you to set Enabled:no disabling that repository. The repository is enabled without it.

Do you see any errors in the terminal when you run sudo apt update after changing to the deb822 format (the new way)?

NOTE: If deciding to manually change to the new format, ensure to rename the old sources.list files to .bak ; using debian command sudo apt modernize-sources does this automagically (without the Enables:yes).

I use Sparky Testing for years. I do not remember, since what time. The latest Sister version (Test) was updated through old format version. When I decided to  upgrade to tiamat version, I did not noticed the changing names post (as pavroo suggested). So I have used the way, I described in my 1 post. I have created debian and sparky souce repo files manually , de activating the Synaptic sources(or inserting the # in front of each line)

I do not see any error in the terminal. The difference is that the new way repo files does not catch updates and the old one yes.

Anyway... I will continue to continue Sparky Testing using old repo way.

Seems that problem was solved.

As per pavroo description in the follow link:

https://wiki.sparkylinux.org/doku.php/upgrade_8_to_9

Change of repos old way

/etc/apt/sources.list (old way)

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian forky main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
 deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian forky main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
 deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security/ forky-security/updates main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
 deb-src http://security.debian.org/debian-security/ forky-security/updates main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
 deb http://deb.debian.org/debian forky-updates main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
 deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian forky-updates main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
 deb http://deb-multimedia.org/ forky main non-free

/etc/apt/sources.list.d/sparky.list (old way):

deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/sparky.gpg.key] https://repo.sparkylinux.org/ core main
 deb-src [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/sparky.gpg.key] https://repo.sparkylinux.org/ core main
 deb [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/sparky.gpg.key] https://repo.sparkylinux.org/ tiamat main
 deb-src [signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/sparky.gpg.key] https://repo.sparkylinux.org/ tiamat main

Notice in the above repos > tiamat instead of forky

Changing of repos in the new way

 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.sources (new way)

Types: deb deb-src
 URIs: http://deb.debian.org/debian/
 Suites: forky
 Components: main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
 Enabled:yes
 Signed-By: /usr/share/keyrings/debian-archive-keyring.gpg

 Types: deb deb-src
 URIs: http://security.debian.org/debian-security/
 Suites: forky-security/updates
 Components: main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
 Enabled:yes
 Signed-By: /usr/share/keyrings/debian-archive-keyring.gpg

 Types: deb deb-src
 URIs: http://deb.debian.org/debian/
 Suites: forky-updates
 Components: main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
 Enabled:yes
 Signed-By: /usr/share/keyrings/debian-archive-keyring.gpg

Notice : Enabled:yes is added

/etc/apt/sources.list.d/sparky.sources

Types: deb deb-src
 URIs: https://repo.sparkylinux.org/
 Suites: core
 Components: main
 Enabled:yes
 Signed-By: /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/sparky-repo.asc

 Types: deb deb-src
 URIs: https://repo.sparkylinux.org/
 Suites: tiamat
 Components: main
 Enabled:yes
 Signed-By: /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/sparky-repo.asc

Notice : Enabled:yes is added

As per clarification found in the follow link  https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList
Here is an example of a debian.sources for trixie:
Types: deb deb-src
URIs: https://deb.debian.org/debian
Suites: trixie trixie-updates
## If you want access to contrib and non-free components,
## add " contrib non-free" after "non-free-firmware":
Components: main non-free-firmware
Enabled: yes
Signed-By: /usr/share/keyrings/debian-archive-keyring.gpg

Types: deb deb-src
URIs: https://security.debian.org/debian-security
Suites: trixie-security
Components: main non-free-firmware
Enabled: yes
Signed-By: /usr/share/keyrings/debian-archive-keyring.gpg

But still changing repos in the new way even with  Enabled:yes does not function for Debian Update...

Definitely I will use the old way ....
