Qemu is the fully open-source emulator, as opposed to VMware and Virtualbox.  The new #3 version has just been out for a few months and Debian has added the 3.1(the .1 versions often have the small bugs that got by the limited number of testers) version to Sid.  It will be arriving for usage in Sparky5 (which uses Debian Testing) in a few days.

For gamers, you might want to investigate.

QuoteUser mode emulation. In this mode, QEMU can launch processes compiled for one CPU on another CPU. It can be used to launch the Wine Windows API emulator (https://www.winehq.org) or to ease cross-compilation and cross-debugging.

It will be another "kick at the can" for me to see if I can export my Virtual box Win7 to qemu, It did not happen easily in past, but I will try again.  Anything to remove the virtualbox .dkms compilation when kernels change is good.
