Title: Xorg problems on new install
Post by: toothandnail on June 23, 2018, 04:07:29 PM
Having got the installer to offer me desktop and browser choices, I installed again (didn't get on with Bugie at all). This time round, I chose XFCE, which is my normal DE of choice. Install went fine.

When I restarted the system, I soon found that I was getting very sluggish responses to almost everything. A bit of checking showed that Xorg was using 100% of the CPU. Seemed to start ok, but very soon started pegging the CPU. I've not seen anything like that before and have no idea how to find out what is causing the problem. I suspect lightdm is the main culprit, but its not easy to replace in any Debian based instaall. If I try to install LXDM in its place, it wants to pull in most of the LXDE as deps, though none of them are really needed. The only other alternative I can see is slim - I will try that later.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Or a way of tracking down the exact culprit? One thing I noticed, lightdm is not able to pull user data when it starts, so I have to enter my user name each time I log in. Looking at the lightdm config, that isn't intentional, but for some reason, lightdm is unable to access the user data to populate the user name field.

As another test, I restored a backup of a much older Sparky install (had to clean up the laptop disk after a fresh Win10 install, so I had decided to install my normal Linux distros fresh). The restored copy is fully updated and shown none of the problems that then new install is showing - user name is correctly determined, CPU usage is low, the machine is nice and responsive. The only thing that gave me any problems was the UUID for the hibernation/resume function.

Any ideas of where to go to fix the new install?

The install is to a Lenovo T420 laptop, using sparkylinux-5.4-x86_64-minimalgui.iso.

Search ours forums.
There is a problem with some xfce plugins which should be removed  from the panel.

Thanks. Took a bit of hunting, and it doesn't seem to be a plugin (or the panel itself for that matter). I knew it couldn't be Conky - I hadn't even installed it on my second Xfce install. It seems that there is something in Xfce that doesn't like the Sparky 5 style. Going to Settings > Appearance > Style and choosing any other style makes CPU usage drop to around 1 - 3 % in idle conditions.

Found the answer in this thread: https://sparkylinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,4195.msg11164.html#msg11164

I'm still seeing problems with lighdm loading user data. Looking through the journal, I see this:

Jun 23 23:11:49 altair lightdm[737]: Error getting user list from org.freedesktop.Accounts: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.Accounts was not provided by any .service files

Any ideas why that one is coming up?

:) I'm also seeing a bluetooth related error:

Jun 23 23:11:48 altair bluetoothd[607]: Sap driver initialization failed.
Jun 23 23:11:48 altair bluetoothd[607]: sap-server: Operation not permitted (1)

That seems to be related to a SIM service, so I'll have to check why its trying to load.

Lightdm displays the error but it can work without accountservices:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=837979
It makes problems sometimes so I removed it from all sparky images.

Do you have this packages installed:
bluetooth bluez-utils blueman

Can't say I've ever seen it cause a problem, but fair enough. That explains the error. Only problem is remembering which user name applies the my sparky login :)

Yes. And bluetooth is working. I've done a bit of checking and the error seems to related to a SIM. My laptop does have a 3g module, but I've never used it (I use a stand-alone 3G MIFI device), so that is probably why I'm seeing that error.

Thanks for the help.

HI. As described and solved here: http://sparkylinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,4195.0.html

I also have the same issue on a fresh install of sparky 5.4 + Xfce. Xorg process at 100% cpu load. Simply changing the Xfce Appearance theme to any other than "Sparky5" solves the Xorg 100% cpu load. So this "Sparky5" theme seems to be the issue here.

sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends lxdm  will install just lxdm.
