I recently installed Sparky Linux on my Netbook, and all was well. But then, I did a system upgrade and now the desktop if missing. How do I go about getting that back? Right now its just a black background.

How did you make the upgrade? In a text console?
Looks like the upgrade went wrong.
If your desktop is black leave it via Ctr+Alt+F2, log in as root to the consle and try to fix packages:
dpkg --configure -a
apt-get install -f
