Title: I Just tried the Midori browser. Going to try "Falkon" next
Post by: kanliot on March 26, 2019, 09:41:59 PM
Firefox is great, but I need to be logged into twitter, but still have a non-siloed experience. (silo is when they push ads based on your personal identity)

So I tried the "Midori" browser, after discarding "Min" browser.  Midori doesn't allow allow the following shortcuts to change url: f7, alt-d, ctrl-L.   AHHH!@ Burn it with fire!

"Falkon" installed directly from debian on sparky-testing.  app launched ok.

Lastly, DuckDuckgo sucks.  Any thoughts?

I've been trying out startpage.com and I like it so far.  They are basically reselling Google searches, but with privacy.

Since i'm mostly satisfied with it, i'd be interested in your reasons why it sucks.

Since i'm mostly satisfied with

search this bruce banner in the hulkbuster

both sites have tons of results, but only google shows why people are talking about the Hulkbuster scenes in the movie.
So, the exact difference is, that google has the exact information I'm looking for, and duckduckgo does not.

So, I might not notice a difference if I know the exact info on the exact page I want to bring up.

Also, google is trash for news now, since they put in the "XPA news blacklist" from Google's Trust and Safety team.    I remember when I could search for news and get non-partisan blogs.  That and the death of RSS....

You mean that "What was the point ..." link on Quora?
Well, DDG has it, too... on page 2, though.

Well, this time, i suppose.
Time and again i see that results can vary wildly with the chosen wording of the query.
So i'm trained always to try yet another tack with the search engine i use, only seldomly switching to another, if nothing works.
YMMV, probably even dependant on G's ranking modification of the week.

Literally just a second ago, I was looking for this page: https://calculus7.org/2012/03/14/galperins-billiard-method-of-computing-pi/  although the blog I first read this on is "lost forever" because like you said,  results appear and disappear.   It took me two google searches to find it, and I didn't  have to rethink my search terms, only add two more words, to the existing search.  On the second try,  google had it as the first result on the second search.

You won't mind this quote.
QuoteOne strain of Unix thinking emphasizes small sharp tools, starting designs from zero, and interfaces that are simple and consistent.

This time it's not on page two of duck duck go:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=ocillating+billiard+ball+bumper+pi+statistical+calculation&t=ffsb&ia=web

:) you did pick out the right link on the hulkbuster theory.  I'd like to hear your theory about who gets to smash Thanos. :)

Thanks very much for that very entertaining read. I'll never look at billiard balls the same. 8^)

Well then, G. seems to work indeed better for you; if from better ranking or your accumulated search history with them, i cannot say.
I still prefer my privacy in searching and rather not feeding the data behemoth.

Sorry, wrong nerd here. I never even knew of Hulkbuster or Thanos before, so, no theory.

I don't think DcuckDuckgo sucks. While its main draw is privacy, DuckDuckGo has another killer feature you may not have heard of. In fact, it should cause you to consider ditching your existing search engine for DuckDuckGo. yes, even Google. I'm talking about bangs.

Just paid attention to your correspondence about the browser and I want to suggest that you try Brave browser instead of Falcon. I used the Falcon for a long time, but in Sparky I didn't like it because of its buggy and I was struck by information about Brave. Try it - you will like it.

yeah I installed Brave.  the package name was   'brave-browser' on sparky 5 stable.

Looks fine, it would have gone smoother if I knew that it was going to nag me about importing bookmarks and telling me how many advertisements it was blocking.

Well, we do this only once - import bookmarks. And the rest is just road dust.
