Title: [Solved]Advanced installer on minimalGUI install
Post by: toothandnail on June 21, 2018, 02:28:56 PM
I've downloaded the latest iso and installed using the advanced installer. Must be missing something...

The install goes through without any problems, but never offers me any choice of desktop or any other software. What am I missing? From the reading I did before starting the install, I expected to be offered an option as to DE and also a web browser. Instead I'm left with the minimal GUI that is used when starting the  install.

In the first stage, the installer checks your internet connection. Then installs the base system, and if the connection is on it runs the desktop installer after to let you choose a desktop and a web browser as well.

So where is a problem?
What iso image have you used?
And the /var/log/sparkylinux-installer.log file could say something.

I'm instaling to a Thinkpad T420, and have a wireless connection. Must admit I didn't check whether it had internet access, but it certainly should have. It certainly did have a connection to the router.

At the end of the base install it says its finished and asks if I want to reboot. No questions about DE or a browser.

QuoteWhat iso image have you used?

sparkylinux-5.4-x86_64-minimalgui.iso Date is the 20th of June and the MDG matched.

Just had a look at it. I don't see anything helpful. All it says is:

==============================================================
live config listing
==============================================================
export LIVE_USERNAME="live"
export LIVE_USER_FULLNAME="Live session user"
export LIVE_HOSTNAME="live"
export LIVE_NOCONFIGS="xinit"
==============================================================
NEW DESKTOP INSTALLATION=no
==============================================================
End of Sparky Advanced Installer Log
==============================================================

Thinking about it, the internet connection was active - I read the installation guide before starting the advanced installer.

I've no idea what is gong on. The only variable I can see which might make any difference is I used MultiBootUSB to add the iso to an existing flash drive. But I've used the same method in the past with older versions of Sparky.

Well, I've fixed it, though I've no idea why the cure worked...

I wrote a new install copy, using dd, direct to a flash drive, so the only one on the flash drive. This time, when it reached the end of the base install, I was prompted to add a DE and web browser. So I'm up and running again, with Budgie as DE (never used it before so thought I'd try it as an alternative to my normal selection of XFCE). So far, so good...

A couple of points - even though I selected UK for both locale and keyboard layout, Budgie was using en_US keyboard layout, had to fix manually. I also noticed during install of a few extra applications (only just started populating the desktop with useful applications) that it installed hunspell_hu, not en. I'll have to have a deeper look at what it being installed and check to see why it should have chosen that alternative.

I'm not too sure about Budgie. Better than the latest Gone, but very limited compared to XFCE. I suspect it won't last too long....

i use linux from the beginning and i dont see the point of setup advanced installer i dont see it , for new users you wil scare them away ..
and for making other distros you better put up calamares , i have try the advance installer two works like a charme but for new users i thing its a bit to much...
i have make a sparkylinux cinnamon distro works fine but i have deleted that advanced installer and put calamares on every build it works just better and faster..  ;D
