Title: Libreoffice on Tyche minimal gui won't function.
Post by: dhinds on November 17, 2018, 06:46:55 PM

Tyche (Sparky Stable 4.9) minimal gui 64 bit doesn't include libreoffice, which is why I am posting this to the Desktops Forum.

I installed it on a desktop computer with a Gigabyte X58 motherboard and a version 1 o7 with 16 Gb of RAM.

I installed libreoffice but it crashed repeatedly after opening files created on another system, including Sparky Multimedia Edition.

So I uninstalled it and attempted to install Apache's openoffice 4.1.5 instead but that proved to be complicated and now I can't install anything at all.

For example:  I tried installing both Flatpak and Snap but as I mentioned, NOTHING will install due to unsatisfiable missing dependencies.

Meanwhile, I learned how to get Libreoffice running with AppImage, which does not need to be installed to function.

And although this may sound disastrous, everything else is functioning beautifully and I am hoping that with a little help I can get this problem straightened out soon.

So thanks in advance, for that.

Tyche == Stable == Stretch.

On my Deb Stable rig  "aptitude show libreoffice" said it was not installed - but it is installed and has been for years.  I use it almost every day.
However  - it is the meta-package. "aptitude show libreoffice-writer" confirms that component is installed as is all the rest.

Choice in stable is 1:5.2.7-1+deb9u4 or you can install the backport  1:6.1.3-1~bpo9+2 and others    I have 1:5.2.7
https://packages.debian.org/stretch/libreoffice

Depending on how big your "/" is (if separate from /home)  I would first check with "df" to make sure you have not maxed out that partition.  The flatpaks and the snaps can eat up a lot of space.

I am puzzled, as the flatpak and the snap should just work as they have all libraries bundled in.  Please post the missing dependencies.

I am guessing you did the initial install via aptus? if not state how installed.
How did you install openoffice?  Their .deb ,  or via  atptus   or synaptic or apt or apt-get?

And of course "sudo dpkg --configure -a"  should do no harm.  If you receive error messages from that please post those.

I'll try the "sudo dpkg --configure -a" now.

I installed Libreoffice via synaptic and later uninstalled it the same way after it crashed repeatedly.

For openoffice I downloaded the deb file from Apache and tried to follow their instructions but did not wind up with a working oo.

I knew there was a conflict between then so I expected to run libreoffice via flatpak or a similar method.  (Gentoo based Calculate Linux - my go-to OS when Sparky acts up) can install both.  It must isolate them somehow).

The error message for the "sudo dpkg --configure -a" is:

On trying to install libreoffice-common right now via synaptic I get this error message:

QuoteE: /var/cache/apt/archives/libreoffice-common_1%3a5.2.7-1+deb9u4_all.deb: trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/soffice', which is also in package openoffice-debian-menus 4.1.5-9789

Maybe I need to remove package openoffice-debian-menus 4.1.5-9789

Flatpack and Snap require installing a controller app.

AppImage doesn't.

Flatpack and Snap are owned by large corporations.

AppImage isn't.

------

I think I just fixed what was wrong by managing to uninstall all of libreoffice.

I then uninstalled openoffice-debian-menu.

So I can begin again.  The question is how?  What would be the best way to avoid a repeat of the same problem?

As for the partition size, it's a single 150 Gb ext4 partition.

OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice can not be installed alongside.
If you need LibreOffice you have to remove all OpenOffice related packages before.

APTus-> Office module displays a warning pop up anyway, if you'd like to install two of them.

What about using Flatpak, Snap or AppImage to run LibreOffice?

That way I could install OpenOffice too, the normal way, right?

Flatpak, Snap or AppImage  do not install files to system structure so they work independly so usung them should be no problem at all.
OpenOffice installed in normal way will be working too.

Just I sugest to clean up the libreoffice which blocks package manager now.

Thank you for the suggestion.

I did that and can now install programs again.

Thanks again, pavroo (and paxmark1 too), for your interest and support.
