Title: upgrade from 4.2 to 5.10 via apt-get
Post by: facciofinta on March 19, 2020, 07:47:14 PM
Hi, is it possible to update a Sparky 4.2 rolling edition to a Sparky 5.10 stable one without reinstalling?
It would be great!

Good, I'll risk!

QuoteIf you would like to upgrade Sparky 4 to Sparky 5 – it is possible, but I recommend to make fresh Sparky 5 installation.
By the way, if you decide to make such upgrade, do:
1. Change Debian repos from 'stretch' to 'buster' or keep 'stable' at the /etc/apt/sources.list
2. Temporary change Sparky repos from 'oldstable' to 'stable' at the /etc/apt/sources.d/sparky-oldstable.list if your system uses Sparky 'oldstable' repos already, and refresh package list:
sudo apt update
3. Install the latest version of 'sparky5-apt' package which has to remove 'sparky4-apt':
sudo apt update
sudo apt install sparky-apt sparky5-apt
4. Then upgrade the system:
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
If any problem:
sudo apt install -f

But can you send me a source.list ?
My it's old and I've changed often it, so that I can not remember how the original sparkylinux one was!

As I just posted elsewhere.  what do you want, what do you need at this point in time. Stability or semi-cutting edge.    Posting the output of "inxi -r" would be helpful

And  more important, have you upgraded of full-upgraded  (dist-upgrade) recently.   If so you just might be in Testing.  There is no easy way to go back to stable.

A quick look is that you have a Debian testing system with deb-multimedia added on.  No Sparky sources noted.  That would be in the /sources.list.d directory.  Why I ask for output of "inxi -r"

Having backports in testing is not going to accomplish much.

Created new wiki pages which direct you to make such upgrade, including new Debian & Sparky repos:
