Introduction / Hey, everyone!

I'm Genaker. I haven't actually had that much experience with lightweight distros, I've always gone with Ubuntu or Manjaro, but Sparky has been great for the 30 minutes I've been using it.

Desktops / CDE apps not displaying in App...

I'm trying Sparky for the first time and I installed CDE. None of the pre-installed apps or the apps I installed with APTus are displaying. I'm not sure how to fix this, nothing I've searched brings me any results that match this issue.

This could be related to my issue as well.. I get:

gnome polkit is installed
gnome polkit is running, exiting...

I don't know how or when I installed gnome, I no longer have it on my system, or so I don't think I do... it could have been when I was trying out the Gnome based text editor "Gedit" because it was being used on the mobile linux phone OS platforms, but it doesn't yet do code folding.. or at least last time I tried it didn't, so I wasn't enthralled. I still have Gedit installed so I prob shouldn't uninstall my gnome polkit, not sure if it is causing my kernel errors during Sparky updates that I posted in another thread. But I've tried out so much software including ubuntu's snaps. I haven't a clue really.

I'm NO LONGER Stuck in the Grub rut, however, the kernel issue that increased in frequency during this issue is not yet resolved or understood by me.

I'm still getting kernel 4.9.337 errors during EVERY routine Sparky update on this XFCE Sparky Semi-rolling installation. Other than that no other serious issues.

My suspicion is that the Grub problem was due to my wifi hardware failing during routine sparky updates.  However, the Kernel 4.9.337 errors that became more frequent during this wifi dropping signal problem during an update is still not understood or resolved.

I am not good at managing my kernels. This is a major reason why I ditched arch linux for something far more sane to manage such as a Debian based distribution. I know I should have chosen a stable instead of a rolling or semirolling but I like the rolling model of SparkyLinux too much and have no intent to abandon this awesome distribution due to my incompetence concerning managing my kernels. I know this is something I need to learn, but can't currently devote the time to doing so. I believe I have maybe 3 kernels currently installed on this installation... and this is likely influenced by the multiple softwares I have installed... On Arch you manage your own kernels and for new user this sucks so i appreciate that Debian distributions seem to attempt to manage this issue based on the horrible software downloading practices I have chosen to make (such as installing and uninstalling various desktop environments on the same system) . I will try to figure this out on my own but can't give any guarantee I will eventually get to doing so.

My wifi hardware still sucks bad;y, but I'm almost used to old crappy hardware designed to run on a proprietary crappy windows driver that doesn't even work on Windows, lol.

I like the Debian 12 splash too almost as much as the Sparky Splash. I chose to allow the change the second or third time around as I got tired of the prompts during routine updates. Love the Blue color schema of Sparky, it is so Debian. Thanks pavroo and devs!

At what point of booting into SparkyLinux did you get stuck? Also, what version of Sparky are you using, semirolling or stable? I'm guilty of omitting this myself. More information is still useful.

I don't have any solutions or explanations for you, however, I am as curious about the problem you experiences as I'm sure others may also be. More information would still be very useful even though your problem is thankfully [Solved]!

  Please do the following:

* Open the ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml file, with the editor you usually use.

* Use the 'search' option of the editor. And search for the entry <showIcons>yes</showIcons>  in the whole file
(... there is only one entry, at the end of the file)

* When you find it you edit it, changing 'yes' to 'no' (<showIcons>no</showIcons>)

* Save changes and close:



* Using the OpenBox Menu
- OpenBox >> Reconfigure

You must edit the ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml file to disable menu icons:
