Title: No internet after restart and network icon is acting like a gif
Post by: sporacubensis on April 19, 2020, 07:44:05 AM
I installed Sparky Linux Game Over ISO and I'm pretty sure everything went well as I have Steam and several games after the First time full upgrade. But when I restart my computer I cannot recconnect to the internet. When I left click the network icon on the bottom right it begins to act like a gif by cycling rapidly through three messages.
1. Device not ready
2. Device not managed
3. No network devices available

I have not used Linux in a very long time so I am a noob. I have installed Sparky Linux three times now and have tried different updates each time. Mostly I was trying to verify that the Game Over version was active so I haven't specifically tried to update any drivers before restarting.

Also I would like to know if having NVIDIA typically requires additional updates, I saw AMD on the release info?

Thanks for any help

Edit : Ok so I reinstalled the from the same bootable USB and I have restarted the system several times now without running the first Run's full upgrade and the error does not ocur. But I'm pretty sure that I would like to update and upgrade everything. Is there a source that will help a newbie to Linux do a full upgrade for everything manually? Maybe I will be able to avoid this little glitch

please post output of

inxi -br

Mark up as code via the # button.

Read up on how to copy from terminal and watch a video on inxi if you stumble.

peace out.

Question 1.  Does your internet work, or is the problem that the icon does not work?

Thank you, you did the inxi thing perfectly.

I work with at risk individuals in facilities, short staffed. and I have  aged parents in lock down, fixing moms computer - finance program and shopping for.
Others can pitch in to post please.  Please remember that the Covid stuff might be affecting posters here.

1.   XFCE good choice for returning to linux-Debian.
2.  Intel graphics   - you do not have to worry about free video drivers versus the newest latest semi-open source or closed source AMD or (mildly evil) NVIDIA.  Good.  Intel is one of the best for providing open source video drivers.
3.  You do not have any "weird" or Ubuntu repositores, that can really make things difficult to impossible.  Good.
4.     Your choice of testing can make things more difficult - however you have a newish motherboard which having Sparky6 - Debian Buster base will often help with the any problems with new hardware, linux and Debian have to play catch up for the newest gear often.  I am not suggesting that you go back to a more stable "stable" line of Sparky-Debian.  Testing is well along and has been very quiet with very few "gotcha's" or big bugs lately.     Good.  This hobbyist thinks you made a good choice.

If you have internet connection problems I would research the
Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3168NGW

If it is just the icon not working, that would probably be a XFCE bug.

Sparky has a very minimal gui for updating.  It is the Sparky founders code and it is well made and robust.  Read the Aptus wiki pages   NOTE:  you do not have to install aptus, it is already installed  https://wiki.sparkylinux.org/doku.php/aptus_upgrade_checker

Install - did you use the standard Calamares installer or the Advanced installer  -- details in the wiki.
