Title: trouble updating SparkyLinux 5.7 rolling edition
Post by: jackmg on April 08, 2019, 07:41:42 AM
I have been working with the rolling release (Openbox) download 5.7 for the last few weeks. One installation is on a hard drive. The other is on a USB stick. All has worked fine until several days ago when upgrading the system. The Aptus upgrade tool displays an upgrade available icon. The process continues until a second round of downloads is requested in a new window. It says: need to get  0 B/69.2 kb of archives. I respond OK to upgrade. Aptus runs a series of downloads and returns to the same upgrade windows to download the same files.

This happens on both machines. I have tried the Aptus options to refresh the package list to no avail. How to I resolve this situation so the rolling upgrades complete without the 69.2 kb of archives message continuously looping?

Thanks for your help.

I have seen a bit on Siduction forum how people change their output via a flag, but did not pay attention.  I did a quick check, could not find it.

I took liberty of using google translate

So possibly just waiting on some files that Dropbox depends on to migrate from Sid.  The downgrade to 2019.02.14 is not that old.

Talking about something I know little about, but maybe, going with a flatpak of dropbox might be a possibility.  If not having the latest, having it be less of a security risk and if you have plenty of room in /      - that might be an option.

I had the same problem yesterday.
The latest version of dropbox installs its own source list, and apt wants to upgrade it even there is the same version of dropbox at sparky and dropbox repos.
To fix it, edit the dropbox repo list:
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/dropbox.list
and add # in the front of the repo line, so it has to looks like that:
#deb [arch=i386,amd64] http://linux.dropbox.com/debian buster main
Then save the file and update apt list again.

I am trying to upgrade from Sparkylinux 5.7 rolling release to 5.8 but not sure how to go about it. Will I need to change my repositories to the buster repos or should running sudo apt full-upgrade upgrade the repository paths automatically for me?

It seems my main repositories are set to sid and testing still.

sudo apt update

You do not need to change repositories now, wait until Buster become stable and I will publish a post about transfering from one version to newer.

Hi.

Pavro is much more competent than me.
My two pens. First I will recommend to deactivate the repositories that have nothing to do with Sparky or Debian ( google , dropbox, microsoft etc). Man. pay attention with repos that are not part of Debian or Sparky. If you do not need them frequently j, deactivate them. I see that you have  different repos> Debian Testing also Debian Sid. I am not very sure if both needed.

Have a look here .

https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-upgrade-debian-9-stretch-to-debian-10-buster

Instead of sid you need to have buster . Just open Synaptic and replace Sid with Buster or ...

In terminal
sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list_backup

sudo sed -i 's/sid/buster/g' /etc/apt/sources.list

Best way to have the right reps....Download Sparky version 5.8 RC and put it in USB. Start computer with this Sparky Live USB. Open Synaptic and get the right repos from there.

I am actually waiting some days (till 06 July 2019 ), when the Debian 10 aka Buster will launched. Very fast I hope that Sparky 5.8 Final will launched.

Thank you pavroo. I will wait. I thought maybe I messed something up that may be preventing me from upgrading.

penguin, I have no idea how or why I added the other repos other than I probably was playing around with something and added them. I will remove them. Thank for the help.

I probably will just wait and maybe do a fresh install when buster is released and Sparkylinux 5.8 supports it.  Sparkylinux 5.7 has run flawlessly since I have installed it. : )

Posting the output of "inxi  -br"   will give us the basics of your machine and your repositories.  Use the # button to mark it up as code.

https://wiki.debian.org/DebianTesting

QuoteI probably will just wait and maybe do a fresh install when buster is released and Sparkylinux 5.8 supports it.

Testing does not work that way.  5.7 is testing and will be the same as 5.8 if you continue to upgrade.  In a few days you will have to decide if you wish to continue with testing as "Buster" will go stable and Bullseye will be the new testing.  And 5 days later you will start to see many many new packages come by.

paxmark1,

Thank you for your reply.

Everything is working great with SparkyLinux 5.7. I just switched the desktop environment from the cinnamon to kde 5 and noticed I was using kde 5.14. I was trying to see why I did not have a way to upgrade to the kde plasma 5.16 and thought maybe it had to do with me running the Debian sid instead of the Debian buster release. I thought that I may have messed something up and broken my updates. It sounds to me that both buster and the KDE 5.16 are new releases though and not fully integrated yet into SparkyLinux but coming soon. I am ok with waiting.

pretty sure the second command is wrong.  if it's wrong, then people are probably reading this thread wrong.  I think it's wrong because my sources.list didn't have the text 'sid'

Also, this thread is titled upgrade sparky-rolling.  So people need to make sure that they're not trying to use this thread to upgrade sparky-stable.

Updating Sparky Linux with apt or apt-get results these days (2019 July) in error messages since the repositories containing the string "testing/updates" have changed their names. After replacing this string (file: /etc/apt/sources.list) with "testing-security" run

sudo apt update (NOT apt-get)

to accept further internal changes. Then run

sudo apt-get --fix-missing update

When this is done, you can use the apt resp. apt-get commands as usual.

By the way this solved another problem with the fwupd package since after upgrading a new version was installed which was able to update my Logitech Unifying Receiver's firmware (the old repository delivered v.1.2.5, the new one provides 1.2.10-1).
