By the way, I did check out the 'solution' / workaround of deleting the 'FreeSans' and 'FreeSerif' font families, and that seems to have resolved the problem, at least based on my initial limited testing. I wasn't sure that I wanted to totally delete them from my system, so I thought about trying to just rename them or move them so that the system wouldn't try to use them. While looking into this, I found the 'font-manager' package (available in repo), which provides a handy GUI for viewing / managing fonts ('Font Manager' in the apps menu of Sparky 7.3 Xfce), including the ability to disable fonts. When using this, the changes happen immediately, and the only additional step you need to do is restart any affected programs if they are already open at the time.

(Still not marking this as solved though, for reasons stated earlier.)

Glad to hear it, dirkskep. :-) If you could do one more thing and add something like '[Solved]' to the beginning or end of this thread's title, that would be helpful for anyone else searching these forums for a solution to the same problem.

No, anyone can do it for a topic they've created, although presumably you would need to be signed in. See this sticky post. Basically, you just edit the first post in the thread; to do that, go to the bottom right of the post and it looks like you can use either 'Quick Edit' or 'More...'-'Modify' to get to a page where you can make the change and save it, etc.

Indeed lsusb gave me a wrong id...
I installed xinput which gives me several id's for the external USB keyboard...

System upgrading / Sparkyy7 Upgrad No login

Sparky7; since last upgrade (last week) i stuck in the "LogIn" Screen
Even when i use the correct Login , i m still in the logIn Screen.

User=Root

Even when i use "Last know working version", it will be the same: stuck in the logIn Screen

I prefer a 2repair" funktion (Pls. step by step, i am not used in terminal; and when it is poss in German; cause english is not my mother Langua)

Cause there are to many datas, which i cant transfer by other live-system to an external usb Stick

I duno wanna use sparky 8; cause 7 is fine for me/and the old hardware

Mit dem letzten Update (letzte Woche) sperrt mich mein Sparky aus.

D.h.; im Live-Betrieb ging plötzlich nichts mehr (Firefox-/Gmail/Facebook etc.) nachdem das Auto-Update eingespielt wurde

Okay, Neustart - Autoanmeldung schlug fehl; ebenso wie der manuelle LogIn

Im Regelfall installiere ich 7 neu (ja, ist mir bekannt, das es 8 gibt);
da dies für die Hardware ideal ist.

Nur auf dem Arbeitsnotebook sind dann doch Daten betroffen, die ich "so" nicht abgreifen kann (ja, live-System starten; Daten auf nen USB Stick ziehen; frisch aufsetzen)
Nur da sind dann nicht nur gespeicherte Webseiten usw.; sondern halt Dtaen, die du so nicht abziehen kannst


Mir ist nicht bekannt, ob Sparky ne repair funktion hat (letzte bekannte Option endet ebenfalls nur im Anmeldefenster - Daten werden akzeptiert, man landet wieder im Anmeldefenster)

Mir ist nicht bekannt, ob ich da zu nem terminalfenster komme (und wenn ja, da bräuchte ich so ne Punkt zu Punkt Anleitung, da ich mich mit Terminalbefehlen noch nie auseinander gesetzt habe)

You're welcome, dirkskep. :-) I haven't used setxkbmap before, but I think the next thing I would try is to use '0002' for the device ID, since it may be looking for the actual hardware ID rather than the bus device number that the system assigns to it. You may already know this, but with a hardware ID string like '1c4f:0002' (i.e. your target keyboard), the first set of four characters before the colon is the numeric ID for the manufacturer and the second set after the colon is the numeric ID for the device. I've found these to often be helpful when searching online for solutions while troubleshooting devices.

Update: The following link looks like it's the same or a similar issue to your use case, in case you haven't seen it yet: https://jpriest.me/post/using-setxkbmap/ . From there it seems like my above comment about the ID is probably wrong, but I haven't tried to test / confirm. If you haven't seen this page yet, it might be what helps you solve your issue, especially in regards to the setxkbmap syntax as well as making it persistent. Another similar (but older) link is https://superuser.com/questions/757170/setxkbmap-how-to-apply-options-to-a-specific-device-only and that page also includes a link to an even older page that you may also find helpful. In the mean time I was checking other sources but nothing is clear...
I'm impressed nobody uses another keyboard on their laptops (layout almost never matches 100%)

If I understand correctly it should not be an issue at all...
setxkbmap has the "-device" option allowing to configure that second (or whatever) keyboard...
I'm not there yet, I'm not getting the syntax right, the device id I tried seems incorrect... (I used the device id from "lsusb")
