Does anyone ever reply to posts on Sparky forum? Not that I'm desperate or anything ;) but so far, I've had exactly 0 replies to anything I've posted. Is this a ghost town? Don't mean to offend, just curious!

I opened a bug report with audacious folks on GitHub. It turns out to be a problem only with certan stream providers (two of my favorite radio stations, so of course I notice it). But my other distros (Q4OS and MX Linux, for two) do not have the issue.

As for my install issue, running sudo apt --fix-broken-install seems to have taken care of that.

But still looking for ideas if there are any folks out there knowledgeable in such things!

Okay, I got curious about the fact that I didn't have this problem on other distros. I saw that at least one of them was running audacious 4.2.1 and didn't have this problem. So I downloaded the 4.2.1 deb file and installed it. There was an install configuration issue due to one of the libraries, but audacious came up and shows the song info on radio streams. Not all is well, however, as my favorite radio station now has a decoding issue (possibly relating to the library error just mentioned).

Sparky maintainers, got any ideas? Sparky mods (@pavroo maybe?) got ideas?

Hi! Everybody

Some how my side pane places shortcut for Downloads is missing from pcmanfm-qt and Thunar. Does anybody know how to recreate the shortcut? I tried to copy the one from the main pane but it will only copy to the home folder location. I am running Sparky 7.8 bookworm 12. Thanks for your time and help.

Sparky Linux kernel / Sparky XanMod v3 kernel will n...
Last post by durhammer - July 16, 2025, 05:31:56 PM
I am trying to get Sparky to boot up with the XanMod stable kernel v3 (couldn't install v4) and ran into problems. First, on kernel 6.1.0-37-amd64, I had the acpi_call module (acpi-call-dkms package) installed, and after installing the XanMod kernel, it would fail to configure that kernel. The errors popped up for anything  installed or removed via apt. I finally got somewhat smart and removed the acpi-call-dkms package, and the XanMod kernel was able to be configured. Or so I thought.

I ran sudo update-grub both on Sparky and on MX Linux 23, which is the master distro for grub boot (Sparky's uEFI install botched booting up other distros, long story, but used MX boot repair to get it fixed).

NOW, when I reboot, I can see the "Advanced Options" for Sparky, including XanMod and its recovery instance, but when I select either, it fails to boot and comes back to the main MX grub menu. I have to chose the Sparky 6.1.0-37amd version to get here.

Not sure where to look to find out what the issue is and correct it. Any ideas?

Sparky applications / Audacious not showing stream m...

I use Audacious now instead of my old fave, Cantata, as Cantata is no longer actively maintained.

New to Sparky and installed Audacious 4.3.1 via Aptus. Loaded my music files and radios playlists. Fired up a favorite radio station. Got music, but there's no song info (artist and title) in the app itself, in hovering over the app in the task bar, or with a desktop notification box.

I've looked at all the plugins and if there's one specific to doing the job, I can't find it.

Anyone know the answer to this?

Applications / I don't think I need exim4 -- ...
Last post by durhammer - July 16, 2025, 12:27:12 AM
I don't like having extra baggage in my RAM, such as "ModemManager" (don't have a modem!) and exim4 (don't use my laptop as an email server or forwarding service). I disabled ModemManager, but exim4 gets a permissions error when I try to disable it. (Oh duh -- do I need to do sudo systemctl ... ?  OK, nope. Besides, I got prompted for password the first time.)

Why is this so difficult to do?

UPDATE: So apparently, doing the systemctl set things in motion to clobber the service, but only after a reboot, which I just did and the thing's gone. DONE!

HUZZAH!!!

It's all fixed now. I wondered what would happen if I detached the external SSD and tried to boot into it on another computer. It went straight to grub rescue, and no amount of rescuing (by me, at least) could fix it. Next, I unplugged the SSD and booted the little HP Stream 13 into its MX 23 Fluxbox edition, then plugged the external SSD back in and ran the MX Boot Repair app, first to repair the SSD's grub partition and then (having seen that the app was able to do it), to the ESP/EFI partition. And it worked! I could then boot from shutdown into my external MX 23 Fluxbox system, and as well, could boot straight into the HP's internal MX 23 Fluxbox setup (it's another nice lightweight distro, so it's in this HP's really limited hardware setup).

All done. Maybe this can help someone else. HOWEVER, Sparky folks should consider allowing the installation without screwing up the ESP/EFI partition on a different SSD (or the same SSD). Be more flexible about the UEFI business -- if the user only has an MBR SSD in a UEFI-capable system, s/he oughta be able to still install Sparky on it!

Update #2. Learned about efibootmgr, not that it helped. Allegedly successfully got rid of Sparky's EFI boot entry (the internal SSD's repaired grub menu can bring it up). No dice. Still boots from shutdown into Sparky. Tried reordering the boot order. Still no dice. How does it keep bringing up Sparky? Grub after all?

Gettin' desprit for help, y'all!
