mouse cursor on mate?

Hi,

while installing sparky-mate (5.1, 64 bit, rolling), the mouse was ok. Even after the reboot.
But after the first upgrade (from testing, a.k.a. rolling), the cursor changes to something like an "x". I don't like that and also have no idea, how to change it back.
This is so annoying to  me, that i tried to reinstall several times, but ran into the same problem every time.

Could someone tell me, what to do?

This depends on the theme used. You can try by using a different theme or change the pointer used by your theme.

Right-click into the desktop (anywhere without an icon).
Click on "Change wallpaper".
Choose Tab called "Theme".
Click "Modify"
Choose Tab called "Cursor"
There you can decide which symbol to use for the mouse.

The actual wording might be different depending on the translation. I am not using the english version so I don't know the exact wording.

Thank you so much for looking at this with me!

I went to the machine in question immediately. I  did open the dialog, selected the mate cursor, but nothing happens. even after a reboot, the situation remains unchanged.
Let me look at it once again:

  • Desktop -> RMB -> Change Background
  • Tab Theme, select TraditionalOK -> customize
  • Tab pointer -> choose an arrow (DMZ white or Mate)
  • close all open dialogs
  • still the same (also after reboot)

As you can see, i am also on localized version, thus only guessing the words on screen. :-)

I have a similar problem, an X cursor instead of the normal arrow and it makes no difference which arrow I choose in the Customise Theme menu.  In addition, I have the problem outlined in the subject entitled: No control icons in Sparky v5.1 Mate.
Dogs laugh, but they laugh with their tails.

I am coming back to this - still unresolved - issue, to repeat the observation, that i considered to be giving a clue:
After Installation, the mouse cursor is ok still.
This time, i repeated the steps, but stopped sparky-firstrun from running. The following is some of the output from
apt-get update
apt-get -s dist-upgrade

Of course, this list is getting longer by the day. And i have absolutely no idea, which update to prevent and how. Repeating my plead for some help/hint... :-)

1.  Thanks for marking up your code.     apt-get -s  good.  ++

Sparky is small.  For it to work well as a group, it will help if some pitch in and lurk in the appropriate irc channels for their DE, MATE for you, and also be able to navigate the Debian bug list and the bug lists for the DE.

What I did during the very difficult time with the gcc conversion in sid- unstable was to select a  few programs that probably did Not affect the chaos,      try with apt-get -s install  blah1 blah 2.  and if no large removals, I would proceed.  If not, back off and try others.    Some to try might be the libreoffice upgrades, aptitude, perl, python3 etc.  NOTE:  you are on your own for this, there are people much more knowledgeable who would disagree.  I have been focusing on lxqt.  If I had more time I would learn more about mate, but ...

But first, look at the bug lists and lurk in the irc channels.

peace out.

OMG,
totally neglecting my wish to stay away from deanonymization...
...also, that i find it difficult enough to speak english, not a single word of polish in my repertoire
Furthermore, just assuming, i would be able to find you. But i couldnt.

I was there (https://sparkylinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,2450.msg3166.html#msg3166) just to peek, but it doesnt seem to exist. also the wiki doesnt mention irc.
And finally: since i came here, i have been trying to be helpful in a couple of threads. This is effectively the first time, i am asking for help... only to find out, my expectations wont get met.

So i will return to where i was before, solitude, just communicating with a couple of dev's outside sparky (like Oracle, zfsonlinux, microsoft).
HUUGE disappointment here!

paxmark1

If you communicate well with devs and are competent, just go with Debian testing then.    They now have the non-free frimware iso's available, you just have to search for them. But if you are going to go with testing, search out places to learn irc.  The siduction manual is good for that, German or English.
