Title: Medion Akoya - wifi and speaker noise
Post by: witek on December 29, 2016, 10:01:17 PM
Hello,

I got a new laptop Medion Akoya and I have two problems:

The minor one is constant noise from speakers somehow related to what is diplayed on the screen as the noise changes when I scroll the content.

The major problem however is wifi. The card is made by Intel so I expected it would work flawlessly:

product: Wireless 3160 [8086:8B3]
vendor: Intel Corporation [8086]

Yet I cannot connect to wifi.  I tried to reload the module:
rmmod iwlmvm iwlwifi; modprobe iwlmvm

but it won`t work. Dmesg says that the driver seems to be loaded but it won`t work.

Can anybody have a solution?

Dmesg says that the driver seems to be loaded but it won`t work.
What about blacklists? Check files in:
/etc/modprobe.d/
looking for blacklisted modules.
Check also:
/etc/network/interfaces
/etc/resolv.conf

Does your eth work fine?

Ethernet works OK. The wifi module is not blacklisted. Strange thing is that wifi gets connected sometimes randomly. One in ten approaches succeeds. After suspend however it won`t connect at all. I tried some other distros and situation is the same. I browsed the net and found many reports regarding problems with this card. I currently run Sparky on several laptops and thought someone here may have an idea. Internet says that reloading the module might work but not in my case. It would not be an answer for my wife or kids anyway. I am very disappointed. I thought Intel supports Linux well.

Happy New Year anyway!

Is there a way to switch off the internal wifi card completely? I tried to use an external wireless on USB but I have problems turning wifi on due to problems with the internal wireless. The Network Manager keeps turning wifi off.

My personal experience with Intel wifi cards are that it works flawlessly, and with good Linux compatibility.

For turning off internal wifi card you can read here, I have not tried it, but good luck! :)

FYI: Wifi issue seems to be fixed with 4.11 kernel
