There is the Sparky Base Edition which features: base system, Openbox, lightdm, tint2, Iceweasel, PCManFM, network-manager and a just a few tools to build the desktop/system manually. The iso image is about 600 MB.

The latest one is 3.3.2-test3.
3.4 Base will be ready next week as well as MATE and Xfce Editions.
