Title: Sparky Backup Sys - login
Post by: grandadruss on February 22, 2015, 04:37:52 AM
Have created iso using SBS, worked flawlessly, now have two bootable iso's, one from cli sparkybackup -dist and one from the gui, choose backup option. Both boot from usb stick, no problem.
So far, excellent.
But, I can't get past the login screen. live live is rejected, so is my username and password and every other combination I can think of.
I have installed Custom Iso Builder and unpacked both iso's but cannot chroot into either. Terminator says "unable to find shell". /bin/bash is there in both.
The system I am working on is one I built up by installing Sparky CLI and then adding stuff so it is very likely my difficulties are caused by me not having installed something SBS and CIB expect to be there.

Sparkybackup.log below. Also terminal output while gui was running.

Getting closer, I think. Spotted tip to run apt-get clean, getting much smaller iso's now.  :)
From root terminal
sparkybackup backup myname.iso
works perfectly, apart from one little problem. home is re-named home_1, first line of sparkybackup.log below
Source directory entry home already used! - trying home_1

Custom-Iso-Builder unpacks iso for me but is still 'unable to find a shell'. I have deleted empty home directory and renamed home_1 to home using mc manually. Working on manual re-build of iso.

Also I find sparkybackup-gui will only build a distribution iso, into which I cannot log, as in previous post. I have checked that I haven't clicked the wrong option, backup is the only option to build iso. Couple of lines from log below

SPARKYBACKUPVERSION="20150223"
Command-line options = dist
/etc/live/config.conf info
export LIVE_USERNAME="live"
export LIVE_USER_FULLNAME="Live session user"
export LIVE_HOSTNAME="live"
export LIVE_NOCONFIGS="xinit"

Still trying, still having fun, still learning!  :)

QuoteCustom-Iso-Builder unpacks iso for me but is still 'unable to find a shell'
Change the default x-terminal-emulator from terminator to any:
su
update-alternatives --config x-terminal-emulator

QuoteBut, I can't get past the login screen
There is an issue with the live-installer you probably used to install sparky on your hard drive before.
If the old installer doesn't make the problem, the new one does.
It does not configure lightdm.conf file properly.
Edit as root the file:
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
and change the line from:
#autologin=live
or whatever there is, to:
#autologin=
The place after "=" has to be empty.

One more thing - I never used "backup" option so I am not sure how does it work (or does this still work).
I use and update only 'dist' option so should be ok for you too.
Making an iso image next time, clean up before:
sudo sparkybackup clean
or via the gui window.

Success  :) :)  Thankyou!

Changed default x-terminal-emulator to lxterminal. Fixed 'unable to find shell'
Edited lightdm.conf.
Custom-Iso-Builder re-built my edited backup iso, I made a bootable usb stick, booted straight into Sparky-i3, installed to my hard-drive, re-booted into new Sparky-i3 on hard-drive.
Very happy man now!  :)

Only had to cheat a little bit. Might only be because I am using i3-wm but Custom-Iso-Builder kept forking and getting ahead of itself. ie it opened a terminal to run mksquashfs and while that was running the gui went on to 'can't find squashfs - exiting now'. I just commented out what had been done in the script and re-ran C-I-B. Also removed -u switch from isohybrid.
Sparkylinux-installer did not like that I was 'me' instead of 'live', so I just commented out that check from the script then it ran fine.
Posting this grateful report of success from my new install. Yay!  :)

Will try to make dist iso next.
Thanks again, could not do these things without your scripts.

That's great!

I never tried i3 before.
If you post list of files/directories where the i3 stores its config (in home dir) - I will add it to the sparky-backup-sys script.

Pretty sure all i3 config files are in ~/.i3 directory.

Edit: Also think files can be put in ~/.config/i3 directory. Sure I read that somewhere.

sparkybackup backup

copied my i3 setup into the iso perfectly, no re-configuring needed on install. Will try dist soon and report.

I have reconfigured sparky-backup-sys and sparky old installer to be compatible with the new installer.
I am testing it now (version 20150313) so no fixing will be needed at lightdm.conf file.

Have updated to latest sparky-backup-sys and ran

sparkybackup dist

Built iso which booted fine, but I still got stuck at the login screen.
Unpacked iso (using custom-iso-builder, works well with lxterminal), chroot'ed in and added user live, also uncommented the two autologin lines from lightdm.conf.
Quote
autologin-user=live
autologin-user-timeout=0

Re-packed, booted, auto-logged-in, installed to harddrive. But installed as backup mode, user live on machine live.
Will try again after deleting user live and with autologin-user=        blank - as you mentioned before - my bad!

Have moved i3 configs to /etc/i3/ where the default config was.

I have fixed the issue with the autologin-user in sparky-backup-sys, it works without any changes in lightdm.conf file.
So it still has to look like that:
#autologin-user=
It means that a new installation made by a new iso made by the newest version sparky-backup-sys works out of the box.

I tried again. SPARKYBACKUPVERSION="20150314". lightdm.conf below. I still get stuck at login when booting iso.

Will try a different display manager next.

At least I can make installable backups, that is good progress.  :)

#autologin-user=
#autologin-user-timeout=0

It's fine.
The two options will be changed 'on-the-fly' via live scripts, when live iso starts and installed system will have no changes.

More progress  :)
Might have found my real problem - in changing display managers discovered I did not have 'xinit' installed. Oops!
Working on 'slim' and 'xinit' now.
