My desktop wallpaper and icons are now gone, wallpaper is just black, conky is still visible as is the app bar across the bottom. I get no right click menu on the desktop nor can I change the wallpaper. What should I do?

What have you done before?
I was accessing a external backup hard drive that I used to use with windows. I've accessed it before with Sparky with no problems, but this time It would not let me into it, even with sudo thunar command. After that the next time I used my computer the wallpaper and icons were gone. I'm also getting a busy cursor and it never stops.
