Title: Painfully slow video, using Sparky XFCE amd64 (WORKAROUND)

i reinstalled VLC, used the Sparky apt thing to install codecs, and still video will not play.  the window opens up, first frame shows, and then it pretty much locks up.  if i click on CLOSE enough time on the window border it eventually quits but neither Gnome Media Player or VLC will play the AVI or WMV or MKV movies i have.  i tried local files on my hard drive, network shares, nothing.  i did install the NVIDIA drivers straight from the repositories...

There are a few things to check:
1. Do you have compositing enabled in XFCE? That might be a potential source of the issue.
2. Another would be VLC settings using some strange output renderer. Try changing to a different output in Tools -> Preferences -> Video (also check if the hardware acceleration option is enabled).
3. You might be also missing some VDPAU packages (again: hardware acceleration), since you're using nVidia.
4. Try running some OpenGL-enabled apps (like glxgears) and see what FPS you're getting.
5. Look at the logs (dmesg command and .xsession-error file in your home directory) for anything regarding graphics, video output or other error messages.

Problems like that aren't easy to trace since there are many potential causes for this behaviour.

hey MoroS i really appreciate your help.  i looked in my system and
1. compositing is NOT enabled
2. in VLC output modules is set to "Automatic"
3. trying to play a video in Gnome Media Player has the same result
4. Dmesg only says this about video

ok.  so more searching the net and i found a temporary solution from somone with an ATI card and the same problem, he set the VLC output to use the X11 driver only.
i did that and it worked.  im not sure if this is something that will be fixed eventually or i am destined to use the slowest but most dependable method for the rest of my days.  sigh.
if anyone hears of a REAL solution other than crippling my display driver and sticking with an outdated and slow video driver, please let me know.

apparently its not a Sparky issue (i really didnt think it was) but a Debian Jessie issue at this point as far as i can tell.

You could also try experimenting with different output settings in VLC (not automatic) while using the binary nVidia module. Another thing is what graphic card do you have and what is your nVidia driver version? Is it the standard nvidia-driver package with the current version 340.65?

You might also try installing these packages:
- libvdpau1
- libvdpau-va-gl1
- vdpau-va-driver

The first one is the VDPAU hardware acceleration library (although you should already have it installed) and the other packages expose the VDPAU for usage with the VA API (a second way of enabling hardware acceleration, as always Linux has alternative ways of doing things, it's either VDPAU or VAAPI).

One thing that made me kind of worried: glxgears (ran in a terminal, not maximized) always shows wild values (normally above 200 FPS is standard, don't ask why, it's just it's way), yet you have 60 FPS. Could you post your glxinfo output? It might be large, so let's try to limit it to GL only: "glxinfo | grep GL".

im off to work but ill try to play with settings a bit deeper when i get back.  i looked at nvidia-settings last night and didnt really see a magic checkbox or something that seemed pivotal.  i appreciate your continued efforts.  it seems like whatever linux distro i try there is always ONE problem to be solved, whether NVIDIA or getting my wireless card to work (Crunchbang) or having trouble with Samba mounts (SolydX).  it would be nice to get it all dialed in, and i don't blame Linux, i blame my lack of deep understanding of the many pieces that make up the whole.  anyway, thanks.

i worked through the video output options and vdPAU locked it up
but set to OpenGL GLX Video (XCB) it works fine, so perhaps the VDPAU thing is broken on my system?

Hard to tell. Maybe there's a bug somewhere in the vdpau libraries, but I have yet to find it in the Debian's bug tracker. Stick with the OpenGL output for the time being. It should provide reasonable performance and some indirect hardware acceleration.

I'm also wondering about another thing: maybe it's an codec issue (I remember reading about codec updates recently)? Have you tried using the VDPAU output with different video formats? It might be hard to check though. The x264 reign continues. ;)

Also: do you have any issues with hardware acceleration in Flash apps/videos? Flash also uses VDPAU, so if it works there, then it would be a clue pointing towards codecs (Flash has them embedded, so it doesn't use the system-provided ones).

well im not sure this helps but i checked to make sure hardware acceleration was on for flash and it seemed to work fine on a demo flash file, bouncing balls or some such.
i then used mediainfo to find a H.264 codec video and an RTP codec video.  both of them exhibited the same behavior, unless somehow i didnt see the H.264 in the output from mediainfo --fullscan for the second one.  then i downloaded a YouTube video and tried to play that, no go.  setting it back to OpenGL made it work again.  any other ideas?

Hmm... On more thing I need to check. Do you have the nvidia-vdpau-driver package installed? Judging from the nVidia driver dependencies this package is not downloaded automatically, so maybe you're just missing the VDPAU support for your driver.

yes, nvidia-vdpau-driver is installed.  there are a lot of postings from people having video trouble on jessie so perhaps something is broken there and trickling down...

we have been going back and forth for days and i felt that something was just plain broke.  then you asked for links to some of the stuff i had been reading.  in trying to assemble some references for you i found this link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1592120&page=3&p=9961868#post9961868 and i tried it, and it worked!  what the hell?  pulseaudio was messing up my video?  does that even make sense to you?  i tried AUTOMATIC in VLC settings as well as VDPAU and all settings in between and everything seems fine.  strange world, my friend.  ill keep messing with it and see if that one seemingly unrelated thing actually fixed it.

Don't you just love when they add something that doesn't work well with a lot of hardware? :D Still, the current version is 5.0, so they had a lot of time to fix it. It's kind of ironic that the glitch-free mechanism causes mega-glitches... Anyway, it's good to see, that this solved the problem. :)
