When I boot up my laptop, there is no sound through the speakers. So I open Alsamixer in a terminal window, and find the speakers muted, and the S/PIDF auto enabled, which is wrong for what I am doing. I set everything in Alsamixer correctly and everything works, until I re-start the computer. After a restart, I need to make my adjustments in Alsamixer again. How can I keep the settings I make, so that after a reboot, Alsamixer is setup the way I want it?
Thanks for Sparky!

are you changing the mixer settings as root?
I'm not totally positive, nut i think you need to use root in order to preserve the change.

OK, I will give that a try and report back.
if not, this may help: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1652691
Unfortunately, I tried saving as root, and I tried all of the suggestions on the URL provided, but every time I reboot, the alsamixer settings revert to speaker muted, and S/PDIF enabled, so no sound until I reset it again. Not sure if I am the only user with this glitch or not ?

I guess this is a little late now ... but it could be that you need to make a .asoundrc
mine looks like this for a Toshiba satellite
defaults.pcm.!card Generic_1
defaults.ctl.!card Generic_1
defaults.pcm.!device 0
defaults.ctl.!device 0
