Title: Installing on an Acer ES1-533 - any way to prevent efi boot manager operations?
Post by: Arifi Koseoglu on October 24, 2019, 11:52:05 AM
Hello everyone,

I am trying to install 5.9 Xfce on an Acer ES1-533 laptop, which has an EFI implementation not letting itself be convinced that there may be operating systems other than Windows 10. The firmware neither has an option for legacy boot, nor a way to add a second trusted boot entry. I disabled secure boot.

The system freezes during the final (post-install?) stage of the install, where I assume it is doing the bootloader stuff.  The same had happened when I tried to install Lubuntu 18.04 LTS on this machine, and I was able to work around it following the procedure outlined in:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/862946/unable-to-install-ubuntu-on-acer-aspire-es1-533/876153#876153

This procedure involves preventing the installer from installing the bootloader, and hence avoiding the step locking up the system when it tries to write to nvram.

With Sparky 5.9 I tried using the advanced installer and choosing to not install grub, but apparently this is not enough and the system still freezes at the end.

I will appreciate any pointers. I searched for command line options of the sparky installer on the web, but was not able to find such information.

Kind regards,
Arifi Koseoglu

I looked at the Ubuntu page,I am not sure what installer they were using 2 years ago.    I glanced at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Ubiquity

I glanced at the Debian forum and found nothing easily.    Your steps listed seem quite well thought out, you have done some homework.  I hope others post soon.
As I posted a couple of days ago, some of the earlier UEFI setups are a piece of crap for linus in general.

The Arch and Centos ... forums might be helpful also.  I wish you luck.

Wait  Maybe some hints here.

Many thanks, paxmark1. I will look into the links and also browse the Arch and Centos forums.

All credit goes to sladek90 in the ubuntu forum. I merely followed his steps with a couple small tweaks specific to my installation differences.
Cheers! :)
