I removed the option to use unstable packages in my Sparky testing system.
And, I found another sid source, removed it too.

After them I did

$ sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade
Now I could install all missing packeges.

Voilà, that was it.

I can make a list of installed packages in the full MATE GUI of SparkyLinux with this command:

sudo dpkg-query -f '${binary:Package}\n' -W > packages_list.txt

After I install Debian Minimum and change the /etc/apt/sources.list file to the SparkyLinux /etc/apt/sources.list file showing the added repositories for Sparky Linux, I can then add all the installed packages that I need to have a full Sparky MATE GUI with this command:

sudo xargs -a packages_list.txt apt install

So far, no success.

My next plan is to get the installed packages list, and a copy of the /etc/apt/sources.list file which gives the Sparky Linux repositories.

Then using a minimal Debian iso, install using console speech. The Debian iso asks you if you want speech during instalation, and if so to press "s".

With that I can make myself a talking Sparky Linux, but it still doesn't solve the problem of having Sparky instalation being accessible for blind users.

One step at a time.

David

I have done some work on achieving this.

First. I installed speech-dispatcher, espeak and espeakup as what's said to be an install with screen reader didn't install them.

Also brltty the braille device driver wasn't installed. I installed that also.

But still no console speech.

Also now I cannot log in with my laptop that has Sparkylinux on it. Log in says "error", so I am sending this from my phone.

Best regards,

David

Thank you for these links.

Of course, please excuse, that I havn't answered ealier. But, on Eastern there wasn't enough time for this.

Unfortunately, none of the methods helped.

But, I remembered, that, maybe, some unstable packages  were installed before changing to trixie. I found here a workaround to get one step further.
With this method I could install k3b again.

But this didn't solve my problem to install vlc.

I have also seen, that some installed packages have been kept back.

OK, I know, that isn't an elegant method to run unstable packages in my testing environment. Therefore, I will remove this option again soon  and go back to a clean testing. I think, than I can also find a solution to install vlc.

System upgrading / Re: Restarting after an upgrad...

I have had the same experience on Sparky 7.x, but I haven't paid attention to whether a kernel update was involved or not. Other distros I've used will prompt for a restart if there's a kernel update. It could be that Sparky doesn't need this, or else the software update program doesn't think the prompt is necessary, not sure which. I guess you could also check if the software update program has any settings / configuration related to this in case you want to change the behavior. For my use cases, I usually shut down at least once a day, so this isn't really an issue for me, so I hadn't taken the time to look into what's happening and why.

System upgrading / Restarting after an upgrade
Last post by grahamperrin - April 01, 2024, 07:15:43 PM
After installing from sparkylinux-2024.02-x86_64-kde.iso I accepted a YAD invitation to upgrade. Pictured: 6.6.0-1 (the kernel, I guess), 5.6.1+really5.4.5-1 (CVE-related), and so on.

After closure of the SparkyTerminal window, OK YAD.

No prompt to restart the operating system, did I overlook something?

First impression: delighted to find known issues promoted (realism; avoid disappointment).

Second impression: disappointed by failure of the first button that I clicked in the welcome dialogue – Known issues.

I took around twenty-four screenshots. I don't intend to flood the forum, alongside my brief introduction :-) so for now, just one:

QuoteI remember fun with defragging around twenty years ago; Windows 7

It's a flippant comment ;-) ... the general thought is to be concise, and not waste space with redundant or obscure comparisons.

Introduction / Ex-AppleSeed, FreeBSD Project ...
Last post by grahamperrin - April 01, 2024, 09:14:20 AM
Briefly (I might flesh this out later):

  • I used, and loved, Apple stuff for around twenty years
  • switched to FreeBSD-based systems maybe a decade ago
  • installed Sparky (rolling) today in VirtualBox on fast-moving FreeBSD 15.0-CURRENT
  • chose Sparky primarily because I genuinely can not recall the name of my previously preferred distro with Plasma, secondarily because it was recently reviewed by Liam Proven

– without the review, I might never have known of the existence of Sparky.
