Title: Wireguard
Post by: greybeard on June 28, 2019, 10:41:24 AM
I'm running sparky 5.8 rc on an em350 netbook. So far I'm happy with how it runs on the limited hardware. Definitely an improvement on lubuntu.

I also run wireguard as a vpn on various other infrastructure (openwrt, lxc, debian vps, windows) and intend running it on my sparky machine. I've a reasonable grasp of Linux.
Before I dive in and try it, has anyone else any experience with wireguard on sparky?
My intention is to treat it like a debian install and see how it goes. Is there any known 'gotchas' regarding differences between debian and sparky as far as kernel/networking is concerned?
cheers
Rod

To best of my knowledge, none or very little difference for networking.  If it has worked on Debian for you, it should work on Sparky.  Should.

Question, is wireguard equivalent to openvpn  or how does it differ?  I see    https://www.wireguard.com/
that it only uses udp.  Why would it be superior,   Oh I read more    Minimal attack surface due to smaller code.  Simpler network interface.

Downside   Not totally vetted yet.

It is making progress though

Give it a shot and let us know how it works out.

edit added - Any posts on the Debian forum?    I see it has a Debian Wiki

Oh, it is only in Sid at moment, and will remain that way until sometime in July (hopefully).

Don't know about Wireguard but I have tried PIA VPN and PureVPN on Debian and Spark. Both VPN works great on Linux distribution for me.

polard22  Please note that wireguard is not a VPN provider.  It is a possible option to openvpn.  etc. etc. etc.  Anything with a fraction of the code of openvpn will be extremely interesting to android, etc.   Wireguard is pregnant with possibilities, but like all new developing code there is the chance of nauseous vomit from bugs inherent in the development process.

see "Similar Packages" on right bottom for etc., etc.  Hopefully it will hit testing 5 days after Bullseye arrives.  The deluge is coming.
