I am assuming I will have to re-install but hope someone has some suggestions to try first. I have a Lenovo Ideapad 110s-11IBR 64 bit laptop. It has WIN10 on the internal EMMC memory and Sparky on M.2 sata SSD. Everything worked well for a month then today a major hiccup for Sparky. Boot brings up GRUB Menu list Sparky and WIN10. Win10 still boots correctly, Sparky doesn't. Choosing Sparky seems like its going to load then I am left with a underscore cursor stuck in the upper left corner of my screen. I have waited quite a while without any change, desktop never shows up. If I tap the power button then the Sparky shutdown graphic appears and it appears to do a normal shutdown.
I thought doing a text startup I could where the hangup occurs, but I was wrong everything scrolls so fast and then hangs as described about.
eh, If I knew what the problem was, I would try and repair this. However, I'm thinking that updating grub caused the problem here, so I'm not going to suggest that updating grub will fix this, since I think that it's what caused your problem.
Maybe pour out a beer on the ground for your lost install :).
In the future, make sure grub2 doesn't decide to install to one boot device, then start installing to a different device, then change its mind again.
Why do you think Grub is at fault. It locates Sparky, I watched the Sparky loading graphic go for some time before it hangs and then see the Sparky graphic again when I tap the power button for the shutdown. I am not doubting you I just would like to understand your reasoning.
oops, I was assuming it was Grub.
When it hangs, can you switch to a vty? Try ctrl+alt+f1
Actually, never mind since I have no idea what the next thing to check would be. :)
maybe /var/log/lightdm/* ?? I really don't know.
if you get to a command prompt, see if you can kill lxqt-session or w/e and get back to lightdm.
Unfortunately, no. It's as if the keyboard is dead.
Is there a way to slow down the text based boot process? If it didn't scroll bye so fast I might have a clue on the issue.
I got lucky, I tried ctrl+alt+f1, then f2, then f3 and got a terminal open with login prompt on tty4.
Not sure what I will do now but it's a ray of hope.
log in as root.
Look at kernel messages man journalctl "journalctl -b -1" is your friend to see previous session.
dpkg --configure -a df to see if / is too full etc. etc.
Thanks for the suggestions. Here's what these commands returned:
sudo journalctl -b -1...............no persistent journal found
sudo dpkg --configure -a.......nothing returned
df /.........................................dev/mmcbblk0p2 25532608 11356840 12855732 47%
More than enough room for the file system. It was suggested in a previous post I kill lxqt-session or w/e and get back to lightdm. Not sure what that all meant, I understand the KILL but the not rest. I attached the output of TOP. Maybe it can shed some light on the problem.top - 12:54:41 up 14 min, 2 users, load average: 0.26, 0.27, 0.19

nice. What are you using for pastebin? I've not gotten a good replacement for pastebin yet?
Is it possible you aren't restarting the pc, but are just not resuming from hibernation without errors?
First the laptop has been shutdown and restarted multiple times, it's not in hibernation.
With respect to my last posting, here's what I did, but its probably more than you want to know ;-)
Cold boot, Grub menu starts Sparky. Sparky animated graphic starts, screen goes black, Sparky graphic returns, then black screen, underscore cursor stuck in upper left corner and no further activity occurs.
Then I do this for the posting:
Ctl-F4 gives me a terminal. I install a usb flash drive. Use "blkid" to identify it and create a mount point. then I execute "top" to a text file: "top -n 1 -b > top-output.txt" then I copy the text file to the USB Flash drive, unmount it and bring it to my desktop. I open the text file, do a copy of the contents, start a reply to the posting, use the octothorpe icon (13th icon bottom row) to insert code and paste it in.
So a long story to say I didn't use any pastebin.
I am guessing that you did not do a encrypted install of your root file under Calamares installer. People having problems with that in various linuxes.
Wow, good show on the usb and blkid. I would have never thought of it. And while I would have used htop from habit, your usage of top shows the more important data and does not show data that is not important. Outstanding.
Sorry that your journalctl logging is not up. Bummer.
via "man journald.conf"
Adding the folder "journal" to /var/log should enable logging. I always change the "auto" switch to "persistent" in the journald.conf in the first line also, but that is not necessary.
journalctl is very nice.
But first try
"systemctl list-units --state=failed"
It might show something important that died.
I do sometimes have the same" "- that blinks after starting up on my very old AtomN270 - but it happens before I see the grub screen. 10 years old. But for me Ctl-Alt-Del does the trick and it goes to the grub screen. You made it to the grub sceen.
If there is a choice of kernels in grub, try using the older kernel.
So 2 places to store operating systems. My Atom's Sparky LXQT on hdd or the Sparky on the sdhc card sometime "fight" after a grub-update for kernel updates. So maybe try going into the "bios"- and try the other the boot source.
Background information Decent, not too old.
https://www.howtogeek.com/196655/how-to-configure-the-grub2-boot-loaders-settings/
"update-grub" should not cause any worse damage.
You could investigate it first - I use nano instead of vi(m)
nano /etc/default/grub
grub can be a pain, but is 10 times better than lilo was.
I did not do any encrypted. I appreciate your suggestions will give them a try now.
One thing I didn't mention. When at the terminal I have tried "startx" This cause a few line of text to be displayed and then it hangs. I tried piping the screen output to the thumb drive to post it here but the failed. If anyone things the information is helpful I will type in a followup posting

Is it possible you aren't restarting
I'm asking because power button can do hibernation, and it looks like a power off. Did you do a sudo shutdown NOW, or a sudo reboot?
Never did a sudo shutdown nut I am doing it now. You may be on to something because the shutdown graphic is staying on for a long time.
It was a ray of hope but after the reboot it didn't change. It sure took a long time to shutdown.
This is what I got from systemctl
UNIT LOAD ACTIVE SUB DESCRIPTION
● systemd-backlight@backlight:intel_backlight.service loaded failed failed Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of backlight:intel_backlight
● systemd-journal-flush.service loaded failed failed Flush Journal to Persistent Storage
LOAD = Reflects whether the unit definition was properly loaded.
ACTIVE = The high-level unit activation state, i.e. generalization of SUB.
SUB = The low-level unit activation state, values depend on unit type.
2 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.
To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.
Here's what I finally got from journalctl

Looking closer at you top, your LXQT and openbox programs are up and running.
I should have thought of this earlier, just try Ctl-Alt-F7 in the terminal
Is your video card an Intel that is part of the computer? I see i915 in top. What is the kernel.
systemctl Back light is a common thing to see - especially if you are on a - not a poroblem
Journaling not started - because /var/log/journal not started But after you made the file - it did start. The journal you see is from after you enabled it.
If you turn off your computer, and then turn it back on you will be able to see the journal from the beginning.
You stated you are in tty4 via the Ctl-Alt-F4. If you logged in as root you do not need sudo before the commands. If you are logged in with your user name, you will need sudo command blah before some. Ctl-Alt-F7 will take you to the graphics (if it is running) it will not if it is not running.
another command is systemd-analyze blame | less ## that will show what things are slowing down the boot.
Rebooted and logged in as root. executing Ctl-Alt-F7 snapped the cursor to the beginning of the command line, it just sits there blinking. Using the enter key brings me to a new functional command line.
This is a low end lenovo 110s laptop, its all Intel. Kernal is 5.0.5

Had to use pastebin for the current output of journalctl:
https://pastebin.com/rV2uVEm1
I looked at the output, nothing looks off.
It's been awhile since I used the tools before systemd. A simpler way of getting your logs would have been
"dmesg | less" ## the output is piped to less which displays one screens worth of data and then hitting the space bar shows you the next page.
My last best guess is that it is the 5.05 kernel messing with something. Possibly your Intel gpu. You see much more of this with Nvidia. Please tell me you do not have a hybrid Bumblebee -Nvidia Optimus gpu.
Correct me if I am wrong. 1. You do get a grub screen
2. You are able to go to a virtual terminal from the flashing "-" in the left upper portion of you monitor. You are not able at all to get into your desktop environment LXQT
If you are not able to get into the grub screen, then it is more difficult to get into a different lower kernel,
If you still do get a grub screen select the advanced options below the first default option and select a kernel from the 4.1x series Without the grub2 screen coming on the only other option would be to use the live version of Sparky to try and fix it or to chroot into it to fix. I have not had to use that much and maybe others can help.
If an earlier kernel does not work , my last options then would be - in the virtual terminal as root
apt update
apt full-upgrade
dpkg --configure -a
If it still fails, try to re-install. Try to stay with a lower kernel.
I do get the Grub menu, I had tried 4.* kernals , I do get a terminal tty4, I have no idea what Bumblebee etc means.
I will try your suggestions using apt and dpkg commands. If all else fails I will re-install.
I can't say enough that I truly appreciate all your help. The timestamp on my reply doesn't coincide with my local time, Is it your time? Are you in Europe
Looks like I came to the end of the road. The laptop doesn't have an ethernet post, wireless isn't working, I have a USB NIC but it's not working as well. So I will do a re-install.
Thanks again to anyone and everyone that offered some suggestions and help.

I take it you mean use "pinning" to stick to an older kernel? https://wiki.debian.org/AptPreferences
I'm asking because I don't know, if I wanted to go back to a previous kernel, how would I do that? I always only see one kernel in grub.
Have you tried blacklisting or removing Intel driver? This way your system will boot using modesetting driver.
I set everything aside and haven't tried re-installing yet, was about to do that and decided to check if there were anymore posts. Glad I did I will try what you suggest. I don't know how to blacklist but will start googling.
I edited grub's kernal command line removing quiet splash and added modprobe.blacklist=8086:22b1
Nothing changed, still no desktop. I am assuming it didn't work because executing lspci -nn outputs the Intel video controller on the second line.
