Installation / Re: Packages are missing
Last post by AxL - February 05, 2025, 04:50:37 PM
Well, it seems that there is finally good news.

There is a new version (> xsane 0.999-12.2) in sid, that fixes the long-standing issue:

  • Subject: Bug#1088080: fixed in xsane 0.999-12.2

    Quote from: xsane 0.999-12.2 - Changelogxsane (0.999-12.2) unstable; urgency=medium

      * Non-maintainer upload.
      * Apply patch from Jeremy Bícha to stop building and installing the gimp
plugin, as it's not compatible anymore with Gimp 3.0.  Closes: #1088080
      * Build-Depend on libjpeg-dev instead of a versioned libjpeg-turbo-dev.
        Closes: #1089018

So, probably, in the next few days it will also be available in testing ....

    Cheers !!

I forgot to comment in the previous message that both alternatives install a lot of KDE6-dependent crap.
So, keep that in mind.

Does anybody of you know more about to find a solution or alternative. In this time I use simple-scan, but, of course, it is not so comfortable like xsane.
Please, check out these links. Let's see if they work for you:

Or, where can I find a road map of integrating all missing applications into testing?

Hello all,

for a lot of weeks GIMP is available gain, but I still miss xsane.

Does anybody of you know more about to find a solution or alternative. In this time I use simple-scan, but, of course, it is not so comfortable like xsane.

Or, where can I find a road map of integrating all missing applications into testing?

Thank you for your help again.

For curiosity only, please can someone explain to me who gets to decide which versions of apps end up in the Debian Stable branch?

See:

Quote from: SYMC-Multimedia on February 01, 2025, 05:08:52 PM[....] The app we use for projection and sound in our church is OpenLP. Installing it from Debian Stable, we get version 3.0.2-2. That's pretty old. The latest and greatest is 3.1.6.

In this case, you would only have as an option to use testing/unstable packages.

Or use a slightly more conservative option. Using the Flatpak pkg provided by OpenLP (which is the version you're looking for).

Cheers !!

Hi. I am an intermediate use of Linux, still groping in the dark over some issues. Like this one.

For the background to this question, see ...
https://forum.sparkylinux.org/index.php?topic=6626.0

For curiosity only, please can someone explain to me who gets to decide which versions of apps end up in the Debian Stable branch?

The app we use for projection and sound in our church is OpenLP. Installing it from Debian Stable, we get version 3.0.2-2. That's pretty old. The latest and greatest is 3.1.6.

Yes, I get that "stable" means "safest", and therefore 3.1.6 hasn't been released long enough for its stability & safety to be fully understood. But surely *some* version in the 3.1.x series would be understood well enough by now to qualify?

Yes, I know about the Unstable branch, but given a team uses this software, I have to be conservative. The concept of the Stable branch definitely suits us better. I'm just asking whether it is too conservative even for us?

So, purely out of curiosity, who decides what software & versions to include in Debian Stable, and how is the decision made?

Introduction / Hello Penguins
Last post by SYMC-Multimedia - January 31, 2025, 06:14:23 PM
Hi. I am Douglas Brown, a member of Sandhurst & Yateley Methodist Church (SYMC). I lead a team of four in providing a multimedia service to our church and (on occasion) the wider community.

I have set up this forum username 'SYMC-Multimedia' so that anyone in my team can take over leadership from me. At my age 71, the proverbial bus gets ever nearer!

There are currently four of us in the team, but I suspect that (for the time being) I will be only one to use this forum account. Until someone else needs to take over.

Apart from myself, the rest of the team are fairly new to penguin-land. Conversion was forced upon us by the forthcoming update of Windows 10 -> 11, and the fact that our church laptop is seven years old. The upgrade cost (including a new laptop) seemed prohibitive. Rather than face Church Council, cap in hand, I proposed to the team that we switch to Linux. (Gottta love 'free forever'.)

I picked Sparky Linux because:
  • I am not prepared (yet) to reformat the proper church laptop HD.
  • The spare laptop (my mother's, RIP) is an ANCIENT Dell Ispiron 15
  • Accordingly, I needed a REALLY small fast & lightweight distro on which to run a browser, Libre Office, and OpenLP (church service projection software).
  • Of all the qualifying distros I tried, Sparky worked the best on this old steam powered laptop.

Well done Pavroo & any other developers!

Once our Linux trial is over and the team is committed to using Linux, I'll reformat the proper church laptop, install Linux on that, and retire this creaky old kit once more. But I think we'll continue using Sparky, for continuity & familiarity. If the team knows it and it works, why change a winning formula?

On that day, I expect Sparky will be even quicker on the proper laptop (even though 'only' seven years old).

Anyway, that's me and that's us. See you around in the other forums. (emoji: waving hand)

Hi, everyone. I'm back to Sparky and very happy to try and see so many great changes!

I have this problem. What should I do? My apt is up-to-date.

$ sudo apt install sparky-obmenu sparky-obmenu-rescue
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Unsatisfied dependencies:
sparky-obmenu : Depends: obmenu but it is not installable
Error: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

I am in Sparky Trixie Seven-Sisters with LXQt Desktop.
