I just had to do a fresh install and have got an error when trying to update the system. The command line output is
dai@sparkylxqt64:~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Error!
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libvlc-bin : Breaks: vlc-nox (< 1:2.2.4-dmo6~) but 1:2.2.4-dmo3 is to be installed
libvlccore8 : Breaks: vlc-nox (< 1:2.2.4-dmo6~) but 1:2.2.4-dmo3 is to be installed
vlc-bin : Breaks: vlc-nox (< 1:2.2.4-dmo6~) but 1:2.2.4-dmo3 is to be installed
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.

Anyone else come across this?
I had already run the first-run script and it appeared to finish sooner than I expected which is why I attempted the manual update.

I removed vlc-nox and everything else updated correctly, I cannot install vlc though due to a package that cannot be found (libirc-client0), I appear to have all the relevant sources in my sources.list, but cannot find this package.

Broken dependencies.
Remove VLC and make autoremove after.
Activate Sid repos, refresh package list and install vlc back.
Than deactivate Sid repos back.
Nothing is easy as it looks. Danielle Steel
