No sound in my laptop speakers - Red led on in the headphone jack

After I installed 64 bit SparkyLinux 4.0 MATE on my laptop, (Acer Aspire 5810TZ) I had a red LED shining out of my headphone jack, and no sound through my built-in speakers. I figured the red LED was for S/PDIF output, but I was not using that.  The headphone jack was working fine with analog audio headphones, but no sound could be directed to the laptop speakers. My laptop uses the HDA Intel sound system. Adjusting the sound mixer GUI settings did not help. The fix was to open a terminal window and type the command: alsamixer -c0.
Then use the arrow keys to select the S/PDIF control and enter the: M command to mute the S/PDIF channel. I muted all three of them, although it seems that in my case S/PDIF1 was the problem. I guess the S/PDIF (shared) outputs are enabled by default as opposed to the more usual analog outputs.
Hope this is useful to others.

this is what works for me
try downloading an update for your sound driver. Then if, the problem is still now solved, re-install your OS.
