[SOLVED] VGA resolution problems

Hi guys, I have been using Sparky for a couple years now I have an old box with an Asus motherboard with onboard video SiS and nothing plugged into the PCIe slot. When I installed from a live cd the live cd allowed my monitor to use full 1280x1024 resolution on installation it changed to 1024x768 i am unable to change it via Lxrandr as there are no other options. It has been about a year and it started bugging me since i have been reviewing some other distros on a usb stick and they seem snappier on a stick than Sparky does with a hd install. I have been trying to resolve this and it seems like there is no xorg.conf file any more but I don't think that is the problem. It seems like I am running a default driver not the one for my onboard card.

Btw I updated everything about a week ago with no difference anyhow here is some pertinent information. Maybe you can help.

The output of glxinfo leads me to believe that the SiS driver is not being used . And the grep mod shows no video driver for SiS.

The first output 'lspci' missing information about driver in use. Run 'lspci -v' again so we will see what is it.

You can try to set the bigger resolution manually, check here:

Tried to set the mode manually but kept getting error message from xrandr like this

I found out that Ubuntu and more than likely Debian as well stopped supporting the SiS 671/771 card around Ubuntu 12.04 I found a .deb file for the driver but can't resolve the dependencies. Ugh. See below.

I think I am running on a Vesa driver. But why does it get 1280x1024 when I am on a live CD or a stick and not during the real install.
I think I need to get a new video card for my PCIe slot, something I had beenplanning on for a while so I can output to HDMI. Am sorely disappointed that the drivers for a common onboard vga like SiS are no longer supported.
Oh btw the mainboard is an Asus P5SD2-VM. Hopefully a new graphics card will improve the perfomance cuz XBMC runs like crap on this machine. A cheap Android tablet does a much better job.

Edit: here is the full output of my attempt to use xrandr to create "newmode" it always fails with the failed to get size for gamma error

Ah yes, SIS graphics. Your X environment is probably choosing the wrong video driver (look at the X logs in /var/log to make sure). Did you try forcing X to use the "vesa" driver via a config file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ (or the old /etc/X11/xorg.conf file)?
There's no such thing as "impossible". :)

Hi, yes on checking the xlog in /var/log, it appears that it trys to use the SIS module but one doesn't exist. One of the first things I tried to do was to check in /etc/X11 for a config  file but there is nothing remotely like the old  xorg.conf from days past. I had to modify it a long time ago with an early Ubuntu distro but now it doesn't even exist. The log file seems to want to point to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ but checking out the contents of that folder didn't give me any promising files to modify.

Ok, I see what's going on here. First Xorg tries to probe some display modules: sis, fbdev and vesa. It checks sis first, but doesn't find it. Next it checks fbdev (framebuffer device driver), finds it and attempts to configure it. It succeedes, so Xorg assumes that will be the display driver for it's session and unloads the vesa driver. To solve this "problem" (as it's just normal autodetection behaviour, not a bug), you should just create a file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/vesa.conf (or something similar), with the following content:

That should force Xorg to use the vesa driver instead of fbdev.

As for the lack of the xorg.conf file, the Xorg server now does autodetection of everything it can via udev, so there's no need for that file anymore (although if one exists, it will be taken into account). Still, some issues might occur, so that's why the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory exists, where you can add multiple fragments of Xorg configuration that requires tuning.
There's no such thing as "impossible". :)

Worked as advertised with a reboot. The 3 minute fix thank you so much. What I found odd was that I was getting full resolution on the LiveCD (with other distros as well) but not with a disk install oh well. Oddly enough there wasn't even an /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory but upon creating it and the file you suggested it works. That's why Linux is so cool there is always someone out there with the solution. Take care and thanks again!

There can be many reasons for that. The order of module loading is one. The LiveCD probably loaded vesa first, so everything worked without an tuning. As for the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory, well, if there's no additional configuration then it might not exist as well.
