sparky GUI keeps restarting on live (XFCE + LXDE i486

System Thinkpad T42p (so old intel centrino; 2gb dRAM)  Also in docking station; did not try external to it.

I've written LXDE & XFCE iso's to DVDR in attempts to try (hoping to install) on my Thinkpad t42p...  (currently has an old version of mint I was hoping to replace with Sparky; also openSuSE 13.1 in another partition)

Both LIVE dvd's boot to initial menu; on selecting 'english' they boot but seconds after gui displays (only part of background behind conky; conky detail, top panel & briefly cairo|dock displays before screen goes dark & nothing for a long period (then it repeats gui  brief appearance).

From tty - dmesg shows  (refer later for /var/log/messages portion)

[  455.966602] lxpolkit[2423]: segfault at a ip b69fe1f1 sp bf9b6090 error 4 in libc-2.18.so[b698a000+1a5000]

Note: Same occurs with both XFCE & LXDE i486 iso's.

Both iso's md5sum was valid; and they both boot up on another more modern desktop; but I downloaded the i486 version as I want it on the T42p.

Anyone got clues - or does Sparky not like my old t42p laptop??

(looking at /var/log/Xorg.0.log - accelerated display; thinkpad buttons recognized, etc.  Only thing I noted not working was while it recognized wireless card & nic - it didn't get an IP address using dhcp (for nic) where I expected it to - maybe significant to issue, maybe not.)

I was unable to post here initially; so the aforementioned text was pasted on the g+ SparkyLinux group; I was asked about .xsession-errors which contained no errors or anything of help.

The following is the /var/log/messages (only portion around errors)

Because the gui keeps restarting; using the TTY is painful as it keeps switching to gui post-restart.
I manually gave machine IP address; then was able to access the attached LAN which was helpful (given I use NFS I loved having the nfs-common available at start!). However was unable to go outside; I looked in /etc/resolv.conf & it was empty of 'nameserver' lines - so added some. Still didn't go outside.

Really was trying to enable openssh-server (so I could SSH in & not be constantly pissed off as screen goes black & resets to gui & I lose tty). I didn't fix this; though this issue is minor (my mistake I bet)

Any clues as to why LIVE sessions (XFCE & LXDE) are not working on my Thinkpad T42p, help appreciated.

edit: PS: only thing I did notice in dmesg file; was linux reported my t42p's firmware was not the latest !!
